I don't get it, it really bothers me too. When i get out of the car with the car running, and shut my door, the idle drops to like 500 for a second. It does the same thing when the cooling fan comes on, and when i put the window all the way up. WTF? Anyone know what this could be or at least experience the same thing?

for the fan this is normal...not sure for the window but def not for the door sounds like maybe a bad connection
try tightening the connections to the battery

i wanna say the alternator is going. voltage regulator, and what not. does your rear defrost make it happen too? or cranking the heater fan to full real fast?

As a matter of fact it does. The alternator has 150000mi on it so i wouldn't be surprised. It's the first thing that popped into my head, but i wasn't sure it made sense.

it might be goin. mine went, and i got it rebuilt. it sure sucks now, too. works, but howls, and surges like yours does still. works still. i'd say ride it out til it dies. buy a new one, and let this one go.

i have a 1995 325is that does it too. I think it has to do with how our windows go up and down when we close the door. (i am not a big fain of frameless windows)

My e46 didn't do this. And that has the auto sealing windows too. Theres definitely a problem somewhere. I'm just concerned that this may be hurting the car.

Thanks for putting my worries to rest, I'll get it fixed and figured out sooner than later and try to get back to this post to actually be of some use on this forum.

i remember my alternator in my sentra, when it went. it threw out too much power. blew all my bulbs at once, except for my left signal (hitting the right is what did it) and my rear centre brake light.
radio fuses went, amp, everything. BOOM! like a camera flash in front of me, the bulbs went. and i'm on the highway. in the dark. doing 100km/h, changing lanes to pass my friend.
i changed my mind.

you know that if it drops to the line halfway in between 1000 and 0.. ITS NOT 500 ... its 650. If you plug your car in to an OBD connection, you can see that. My car idles at 650 all the time. No problems there.

lol, i would have changed my mind too. Reminds me of a something. I was screwing around with this vette one night and he wouldn't let me pass him. My friends made a bet that i wouldn't pass him in the next 3 miles. I took the bet. I dropped about a quarter mile back, killed the headlights and blew by him before he even realized what was coming. He was quite pissed, but i made 35 bucks from my friends (who cried foul). You just made me remember that, thanks!

WOW, REALLY? Holy crap. I really didn't know that. Thanks, awesome info!

I was definitely on my game that night, if it were any other night I'm sure it wouldn't have come to me that quickly! Just another thing to even the playing field in the muscle vs. import battle i guess!

Same here, my passenger window won't go up unless the door is shut. :confused
