I haven't quite completely diagnosed the problem, could be any number of things, but I think the trans is shot. Does anyone have any advice on how to replace a ZF A5S310z? possible cheap temporary options (ie used replacement)?
This may be a stupid question but will a four speed auto out of an e30 89 325I work on an e36 325i Sedan?
At this point I do not have the time or money for a manual conversion so Im counting that out at this point. Any suggestions or leads for a replacement would be much appreciated! Thanks everyone.

the e30 trans might line up but your in for a HUGE headache with the wires. count out the e30 trans. normaly i would say do the 5-sped swap but your probably rite that it is faster do do the auto. i would look in my local scrap yards and see if i could find a trans if i was in your situation.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Do any of the auto trans flavors used on e36 cars work for all e36s? Or do I have to find a A5S 310z? Also how much do the junkyard transmissions usually go for in your experience?

if only you where local...
i have 2 auto trannies one's off a 95 m3 w/ 95k miles and another off a 97 328i w/ 140k miles all in good working order.
selling each for $100....both come w/ their respective torque converters.
i guess s/h would be a problem.
i think e36 auto trannies are different b/n years and models as my 95 auto looks diffrent than the 97 one-i could be wrong though...
usually salvage yards sell them for $700-900

Good choice with the M3 tranny. Theres no point in keeping with the 4 gear a/t out of the standard E36.
I also have a spare A5S310Z A/T if your interested.
