View Full Version : OK did I buy the "right" ZF310? Newbie question

I just put a deposit on a ZF 310 out of a 1992 525i 5speed. The car has a build date of 9/91 (although realoem is telling me 10/91) The last 7 of the vin are BF97163

Realoem lists the correct ZF310 for the build mth/yr as a s5d310Z-thdj

I found the last 4 letters change on the ZF's built after 10/91 and then change again.

Ok my question... Will the ZF I am buying work in my 1995 525iT?

Thanks and yes I searched but no auto/manual threads were that specific.

Andrew

you jsut weren't reading correctly.
it came out of an e34 5 series, it will fit an e34 5 series.

did you get the xmember, bolts, exhaust holder, driveshaft, shifter mechanism, to match as well? transmounts and guibo are the same as the automatic, everything else is different form an auto or a getrag.

you need all that stuff from a zf 525.

Do the ZF310 out of m3's fit our cars as well?

supposedly... but when i saw some pictures of them, they looked like they had a shorter tailshaft. so, I dunno.

I do know that what the m3 crowd asks for transmissions is ridiculous.

I bought the transmission,the support that goes under the transmission the shifter rod, knob, boot and surrround.

What is the "xmember" Are the bolts ZF specific? Can you tell me more about what the exhaust holder looks like and is it ZF specific? Is the driveshaft ZF specific?

The reason I ask is I was going to by this "kit" from EuroDepot minus the transmission. http://www.theeurodepot.com/index.php?id=14
and I was going on the assumption even though their kit is for a Getrag all of the parts are the same and not Getrag/ZF specific. If there are ZF specific parts I need besides the support and shifter rod please let me know. I am driving 7+ hours to PA from Mass on Thursday to get the transmission and I can pick up other parts while I am there. Of course the seller will require some heads up as he is taking apart his 92 525i based on the parts I have requested.

Thanks!

read shrike's thread that i gave a link to in the first post of my swap thread.

Just about everything except the clutch assembly and clutch hydraulics are ZF specific or have some zf specific parts.

the euro depot is great if you are goign to run a getrag... otherwise it is a waste of time and money

zfs are rare and use many different parts. enough to really screw you over $$$ and time wise if you don't grab the whole driveline.

Drive shaft = zf only
xmember = zf only
guibo= zf or auto
trans mount rubber=zf or auto
bolts and exhaust bracket = manual (maybe zf only... look em up in real oem and find out)
final drive's flange and ratio = manual only
complete shifter assembly = zf specific parts in it, some any e34 manual)

xmember=crossmember ie support under the trans BTW. x means cross.

Shift lever is the same (part the knob goes on) one of the other two is zf only... make sure you get all three parts.

Mounting Bolts are definately manual specific, you cant reuse your auto bolts. zf specific or not I dunno, I looked up my donor's vin to order parts.

DS nuts are same as auto, because guibo is same. Diff flange nuts are different. both of them are one time use only, as are the flywheel bolts.

I can not tell you about the exhaust bracket because I still don;t have one on the car.
can tell you that you need one from a manual car, so get the one from the zf car.

Get the diff too unless you already have a 5 speed's diff. if it is a zf car it is possibly an LSD 3.23 ( s323 on the tag)

Basically you want everything from the bell housing all the way back to the diff from the zf car.

Its supposed to be center. It looks fine in other threads but the writting from andrewcconti (OP) goes way to the right for some reason so it moves everthing over with it
