Rear Axle Question

1998 M3 Coupe

I have an axle (driver's side) that has some play in the CV. The local shop recommended just swapping the entire axle with another used axle. They said replacing the CV(s) is more expensive than just find a used axle.

My question is, can I use an axle from any e36, or does it have to be for an M3? If M3, are all years of e36 the same?

I wrecked mine a few years ago; I had to replace the diff, subframe, trailing arm, shocks, axle shaft and evrything else pretty much. When I went to find the shaft, I asked for the m3's, and the guy told me it was the same thing in any e36. So that's what I have in mine.
