Ok my cooling system has never been replaced and is quickly nearing the end of its life. I have read and searched plenty on rebuilding the cooling system, the FDM, lower thermostats and so on. My question is if there is an aftermarket aluminum fan for our cars and if anyone runs one. Follow my thinking here: the FDMs sole purpose is the peace of mind that your fan isn't going to explode and .17whp. My bimmer is my DD and I can't risk driving in bumper to bumper traffic everyday in 100+ degrees w/o a fan, but my fan is starting to crack. It seems an aftermarket fan would offer both the cooling advantages of the existing fan w/o the threat of exploding. The only aftermarket fan I could even find was from zionsville, and it's freakin expensive.

-Looking for your guys input on the subbject, and don't just tell me to do the FDM :stickoutt
Thanks.

Just do the FDM :stickoutt

And put a SPAL electric on the radiator, wired into the two-speed fan switch for the auxilary fan... just use the lower temperature 318 unit. It kicks on the low speed at 80c, and the high speed at 88c, I think. It's what I'm running.

Bris, is your SPAL on the high speed or low speed circuit? Mine's on the high speed, and everything seems good, but I've not run it in the heat of summer yet. It's kind of unnerving to watch the temperature gauge creep to 195F or so.

I've never seen one, just electric conversions. That doesn't mean you can't get one that'll fit on there, though.

Personally I'd be concerned, half the time the plastic blades brake due to fan/radiator collision brought upon by worn motor mounts. If an aluminium fan hit the radiator, oye... talk about a mess.

Hmmm good point, bad motor mounts and thrown water pump bearings are common causes as well. You have convinced me, ill get a new radiator, exp tank, therm housing, hoses, SPAL fan and FDM and then I will be invincible to heat muhaha :devillook!!!

Wow, you guys never heard of the Ford Taurus fan mod?

Look it up. Higher CFM rating then most expensive aftermarket fans for a fraction of the price.

Aha, see I learned something :stickoutt.

There is no writeup or anything about the fan for bimmers.

Its just a lil automotive secret for your weekend tracker. Its used mainly by american v8 guys because it cools so good and so cheap, rock climbers use them in their jeeps ect, and i learned about them through local drifters.

Just imagine how good it cools for the rock climber and drifters. Thos two sports, there is not alot of front forward air to cool the engine, so the fan has to work extra hard to pull in even more air.

Its a simple 3 wire install, one wire is ground, the other are hi and lo. Most people run lo because high is insanely powerful.

Some people have pushed the fans limits to the point the wires would melt, so upgrading to a larger wire would be key if you plan on running it hard.

Heres some random sources i pulled up from a quick google search.

And i know most of you guys dont want to throw in a ugly fan shroud (even tho i would most recommend using one).
