I thought i had solved my auto problem in my 1992 318i but its come back. The limp mode comes on and i lose 1st and 2nd gear. I have recentley changed the oil, didnt fix it, the alternator was a bit dicky so i was told that could be it so i replaced that. It seem to work ok for a few weeks and then came back. Posting on bimmer forum i was told not to drive it like an old man but to put a bit of spirit into it. So i tried driving a little harder, apart from finding the little kid in me, the problem went away. Now 3 months later it's back no matter how i drive it. Its also now hanging in gear and needs to be manully changed sometimes. Anyone had this problem ??
Cheers

My 93 318is did the same thing. Safe mode here and there until it finally just permanently went into safe mode. It ended up being my transmission getting too much power surged into it. My alternator never went out, but was fluctuating up and down a lot. Causing it to safe mode out. I replaced the ALT and ran smooth once again. Hope your's simple as that.

I had the same problem with my '92 325is on and off for a while. I finally took it to my local indy shop and they read the code. It was some kind of solenoid that was tripping the limp mode. Anyway, they cleared the code and hasn't happened since. Since then I have also had my tranny fluid and filter changed. NOT flushed however.
