Assuming you do not have staggered wheels, the 18x8.5 should be plenty wide to support the 225 width of the tire.

If you look at the back of your current wheels, you should have all of the wheel information you need.. 18x? ET? (offset)

doesnt staggered = FTL in terms of tire life? rotating cant really be done...only back and forth swap

My Type II's are 8.5inch with 225 tires on it fits nicely.

Add unidirectional tires with staggered and you cannot even rotate left and right. However, the more aggressive appearance is well worth it. Just make sure to keep it well aligned because these new high performance tires will wear very quickly if not riding perfectly. I currently have 245/40-18 on front and 275/35-18 on the back but am in the processing of purchasing 245/30-20 for the front and 295/25-20 for the rear with unidirectional tires. Should look nice and last me a few summers as I have dedicated winter tires.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Hmmm... I looked at mine and couldn't see any offset figures. It reads 8Jx17xH2; does this make any sense?

Your wheels are 17x8 (obviously)... It's possible the offset is stamped on the front. It's going to be on there somewhere. The last wheels I had didn't clearly have the offset. Until I cleaned the wheels very well. wipe them down... it'll be there.

The wheels are showroom clean and off the car. I've looked all over and can't see anything resembling an ET figure. Hmmm. Are wheel manufacturers required to include this information somewhere?

Not sure what is required.. but if they were installed on your e36, I would assume they are 35-40mm.
