View Full Version : Noise from Rear only when moving slow and turning sharp HELP!

I searched through a bunch of postings and can’t find anyone that describes the problem like the one I am having.

I hear a creaking/clunking noise only when I’m going slow and turning sharp. For example when driving in a parking garage and going around the turn I will start to hear this noise in the rear. Or if I’m pulling into a parking spot I will hear the noise as I pull in.

I have turned sharp when entering and exiting on and off ramps at higher speeds and I don’t hear any noise. The only parts I have replaced recently in the rear are the springs and shocks. Anyone have a problem that sounds like this?

*Update* 05/11/08 - Replaced the diff fluid and problem is still there.

Check your rear differential fluid. If it's low, or just simply needs replaced it can cause this problem. It likely that it needs done anyways even if it's not your problem, so you can't lose.

Edit: also check your RSM's (Rear shock mounts)

I did not check the fluid yet.

However I did check the RSM's. No wear at all they are in great shape. I pulled the rear wheels off both sides and no wear at all anywhere. All the boots are in good shape no tears, the bushings have no cracks at all. Also, no play what so ever with the rear wheels. I spent a good amount of time trying to feel for any play and I got nothing.

I also drove around and pulled up the ebrake a few clicks. I think the noise might have gone away but I'm not 100%. What is it that causes a noise when the ebrake goes bad?

What is the best way to check the rear diff fluid? Anyone know a good DIY for replacing the fluid and what kind to buy?

Replaced the diff fluid and still no luck. I found out its only under slower very sharp turns. Any ideas?

My car is making the same noises under the same conditions.

Back in March, swapped in a 3.23 LSD that had been sitting for a while. Filled it with Mobile1 75-90 and just changed to LubroMoly 75-90 yesterday and the noise is still there. The diff oil level is not low. Car did not make this noise with the old diff. It almost sounds like tire rubbing, but it isn't.

I guess the next thing to try would be a 75-140 oil.

Before I waste anymore money though, is this noise a sign of a bad diff or just a diff with the wrong oil?

Yep, that sounds just like the problem. I can't figure out what it is. I have put the car on a lift a few times and don't see any damage or any visible. I think I'm going to ignore it for now. I have interior issues I need to focus on.
