I signed up to this forum so that i could learn everything possible about BMW's and untill now all i have known about M is that it is just a bmw trade mark i never eally knew what it meant ... if someone asked me the difference between a 540 and an M5 i couldnt tell them the difference ... so in your minds what is the definition of ///M

manual tranny, high output/high reving motor, m-tech suspension, high flowing exhaust, built by BMW ///M Gbmh

Thats the technical stuff. Otherwise, it is just a badass car that kicks ass in every way.

///M doesn't mean manual tranny. There are a million and one auto M3's

it does now, thats why they didn't want to call the X5 4.6is an MX5. The corporate guys at BMW said it themselves. I think its a shift in their marketing and philosphy. Yes, I know there are auto M3s out there, no, I'm not a proud owner of one either.

//M= Motorsport.. with the M5 and 540.. the M5 gets larger 5 Liter 394 hp motor... beefed up suspension and braking.. larger M wheels.. standard getrag 6 speed.. quad exhaust tips.. no spare tire, different body kit and mirrors.. the interior is also quite different.. different leather design for the seats.. different rear view mirror, gauges, M steering wheel and shift knob.. the roof the the M5 is leather, either suede or alcantra.. cant remember.. they change out little things here and there.. but what ///M is all about is.. is giving your car race car or super abilities.. without sacraficing comfort or everyday drivablity.. most every car company these days has a division like ///M.. benz has AMG, Audi has their S4, RS6 etc.. Ford has SVT.. it basically getting the best car from the company that has been tweaked by them..

Makes me mad, because shopping for a E36 M3 is a BITCH. As soon as you thought you found a good deal - you find out the car is an automatic. :pissed:

M means higher performance. basically its an ingenius marketing idea to get the average joe to think that the difference between the best NON M car and an actual M car is significant.

MotorWerkz
05-10-2003, 10:24 PM
for e36 , non M and M series has not much cosmetic differences

at least, non M can make their car look like M

for e46, non M and M has a lot of cosmetic differences thus making a non M to M is difficult.

"AG" translates to "Aktiengesellschaft," which means shareholding company. The American equivalent is "Inc." or Incorporated

"GmbH" translates to "Gesellschaft mit beschränckter Haftung" which means "company with limited liability", like our "LLC" or Limited liability company.

Thanks to my dad for translating these German abbreviations to English and explaining this to me.

I disagree, i think the move to SMG is just a step in keeping up with race cars. You still have the clutch and direct link between the engine and driveshaft, it's just computer controlled. It should make you faster, right? and no costly mis-shifts :D It does take a good chunk of required skill (and fun?) out of driving, i guess thats just a choice you have to make: fun vs. lap time.

It stands for motorsport. If you go to BMWUSA.com and look at the links on the page, you can see motorsport is listed under M and no others.

Here are a couple of other sites too:

No...LLC is a Limited Liability Corporation...usually used in partnerships. Limited is the way the UK specifies a corporation - in a very loose translation to US terms.

In 1994 or 1995, BMW Motorsport was officially renamed BMW M Gmbh (which as was noted above, is analogous to "Incorporated").

As an elitist, I feel that M truly means individual throttle bodies a la my 1988 M3. Unlike my 1998 M3, which I refer to as a 332i Sport.

I hear you there, it's been a bitch. I've yet to start looking really hard, but right now I’ve only found one worth looking into, and its way out of my price range.

I thought that the SMG is an option on the new gen Ms, or that its standard, and the manual is an option. I can't believe they will really be cutting the manual out of the line up. If they do, they are hanging themselves. But since there has been so much in the world of transmission development lately: so many hush-hush 7 speeds, I truly doubt BMW will hang the manual out to dry. But if they do, we're going to be seeing a lot more how-tos and where-tos on tranny swaps.

I was by the dealership a few days ago and an X5 4.6 drove by with a ///M logo on the other side. Looked odd with the logo, but since it is sort of the M of the SUV, I guess its justified.

BMW has never said that. 6 Speed is standard, SMG is optional. No specs are out on the Z4 or new 5 series M versions - they may have 6 speeds, may have SMG, may offer both. Anyone who says they know is guessing.

if u seriously want to know. buy Unbeatable BMW. it has the full history of bmw dating back before WW1 with its superior fighter plane engines . from then on they started manufactoring and racing motorcycles then cars. in the 70's BMW decided to make a division to dedicated to motorsport racing and to show the capabilities of bmw engineers and named it the M division. so the M division bascially concentrates on professional motorsports. they then they use sum of those technologies to be used on bmw based cars and to be sold to the public.
