Hoping you guys can help me make a decision. I just sold my Chevelle and am looking to get another toy. I'm thinking e36 M3. I want something that will hold it's value and don't want to have to fix it every week like the muscle car. I probably have 12-15k to spend. You think I can get in a CLEAN, low mileage, M3? Will I be happy with the performance? I own a 93 318is and have driven several 325's and 328's, all nice cars but was not impressed by the performance. Are the M's that much better?

Yes, the performance is much better. The M3 will feel torqier and will pull even harder in the upper RPMS. It's gonna make your 318i feel like 2ton rock.
I bought a 97 M3/4/5 (4door, 5 speed) with 85,000 that was in super condition for 12.9k or so. So yes, you can get a really nice M3 for 12-15k. Lots of people on these forums with well over 100,000k who feel like they've just broken in their motors. Some even tossing turbo and supercharger setups on.
Find a nice deal for 11-12k, and then put the other three into a supercharger setup and you'll never look back :).
I too came from a muscle 'car' setup to an M3. While I do miss the feel and sound of a chevy v8, this is a whole different type of car. Its nice being able to go fast in places other than straight lines.

You should be able to get a nice M3 for 12-15k, and yes they do perform better than a regular 3 series.
You don't really need to worry too much about mileage for these cars. I know a few guys with 200,000+ miles on their E36 M3s, and they say their cars still run like new. If the car has been taken care of properly, it'll run forever.

Exactly why I go rid of it!
350hp + 4 wheel drum brakes = Death Machine
I'm hung up on the mileage thing more because of resale value than anything else. All I want to do is wax it. I don't need one with tons of mods. Maybe wheels and exhaust, not much more. There is a nice 97 on this forum now, but it has the luxury package. I gotta have those vader seats. The name alone is worth waiting for! As soon as I dump the 318 I'll be on the hunt! Any other good places to find an M?
M3 is the best choice for daily driver, but doin't expect it to hold the value, prices are going down. They're stabilize at some point, who knows when.

I'm not at all looking for a daily driver. I want something for nice sunny days to make my friends and neighbors jealous. I'm desperatley trying to recapture that passion for driving I once had. The muscle car didn't work, so I'm hoping an m3 will...

M3 will do that, and then some.
make sure you have a nice exhaust system, makes all the difference.

Picked up a 95 with 80k. Conforti intake, chip from Turner Motorsports, Euro HFM, and an aluminum radiator. This thing flies!!! I had no idea it would be this quick, not to mention the handling! I seriously underestimated these things. I'm sold!!!!

:( unfortunatley you get used to this and then the need for further modding begins....oh well :evil2
