View Full Version : Odometer vs. Clerical Issue?

I recently puchased a 2006 325xi with ~20K miles. During the reg process, which occurred after the sales transaction took place, it was found that the most recent title transfer was processed in 06 at 55K miles. The dealership claims this is a clerical issue and the title should state 5K miles. How can I ensure that the odometer has not been rolled back? Can a diagnostic test be done? The service docs provided by same dealer show mileage numbers ranging from 1 to 19K miles over the last two years. If it is a clerical issue as claimed, and a new correct title is (eventually) issued, will the odometer discrepency follow me on the title (or on CARFAX) when I try to sell the car in the future? Also, is there any way I can find out what the odometer read at past car inspection dates? The CARFAX (that the dealer provided) shows car inspection but does not list miles. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

it is very far fetched that the car was driver 55k miles in less than 1 year don't you think? The dealer records are your proof in case anyone complains.

WELL, EVEN THE DEALER RECORDS CLAIM MILEAGE UP TO 19k. LEAVE THIS CAR ALONE. WHILE IT IS VERY EASY TO DETERMINE THAT IT IS NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE AT THIS POINT...... IN 5 YEARS WHEN YOU SELL THE CAR AND THE PROSPECTIVE BUYER SEE THAT ON A CARFAX..... YOU ARE GOING TO BE FORCED TO LOWER YOUR ASKING PRICE.

Thanks for your replies. The carfax I currently has does not show any miles next to the title issue. I called and they said sometimes the DMV doesn't always report the info to them. If that's the case, does anyone know if more details from a past transaction will eventually show up later down the road?

The dealership claims they are working with DMV to rectify situation. I have since learned through my own investigation with the DMV the following:

08.06 Inspection sticker granted @ 5K miles
08.06 Title granted @ 55K miles
08.07 Inspection sticker granted @ 14K miles

So it really does appear to be a clerical issue. All and all, annoying... especially considering I purchased the car and traded my car in before this issue was discovered.
