Hey, I just bought a brand new 08 328i convertible last night. Heres the breakdown:

Alpine White exterior
Black interior
Sport package
Premium package
Navigation (which i have NO idea how to use, haha)
Heated front seats
Ipod adaptor
Comfort Access

The sticker price was $52,700.00 and I got $2,800. off so it came out to $49,900. + tax + registration. I also bought 72/100,000 maintenences warranty and some tire warranty? With a down payment of only $4,500. and their special 60 months, 4.9% financing... my total monthly payment is $999.00/month for 60 months.

This is alittle too much of a car for me, a 21 year old receptionist BUT i love Love LOVE this car that it makes it all worth cutting down on entertainment... Well, completely cutting entertainment, that is, haha//. So tell me what you think, did I get a good deal, so so, or hell no? I'm a female and I really don't know much about cars nor do I negotiate well (this is my second car) so yah... I didn't even know cars don't come with floor mats, wth? hahaaaaa.

&&& I'll post pics. up later, promise! =]

Can't help with the financing part, but the price is better than mine. I only got $1,200 off and had to order the car (2 month wait).

This was almost 6 months ago, though. I'm assuming they're probably not back ordered anymore?

Hey, as long as you're happy and you can afford it it's all ok! :D

Ya, but most dealers throw them in for free. Very generous of 'em! :rolleyes

The numbers look okay, The price of the car and your age don't seem okay... I don't know what you make a year but $1000 a month on a car at 21 is insane.

yaaah, im not techically ballin' but i dont have any bills... i've saved just a little, i have a safe, stable and secure job.... i think $1000 a month is alot so i have to cut down on shopping and entertainment.... if i didnt buy this car, i would have prob. blown $1000 on shopping/entertainment ++ anyways, hahaha// my sacrifices for a lovely car, im happy! hehe!

yah, my aunt helped me negotiate. the guy didnt have the white color on the lot so he said it was suppose to be shipped from LA... it took only two days of waiting. i had gone to peter pan bmw in san mateo too look at bimmers, and they had the same exact one on the lot, but the guy was such a jerk i delt with so we left.... next thing u know, i get a call to pick up my car at autowest moutain view and there was a tiny sticker, mt. view missed on the lower left side, it said peter pan bmw, hahahaha.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. As she mentioned, she'll need to be making sacrifices to afford it. As long as it works out and she's happy it's all good.

I got bored and crunched some numbers.

$12k / year in car payments. The car is going to drink a bunch of $4.00 / gallon premium gas. At 21, you don't get the 25+ insurance break, so insurance is still expensive. With a car this nice (and new), you're nuts if you don't go full coverage.

Just estimating, but I'm guessing that the car will end up consuming about $22k - $28k / year in pre-tax money for everything mentioned above.

Throw in $1300 / month for an apartment and you need to be making $42k - $48k per year just to break even (and that's before food, fun, and misc expenses).

It's looks doable, and some of the costs can move around (like gas, apartment rent, etc).

2800 off seems like a decent deals. I know women can go through a Grand in no time, so spending it on something you enjoy every days is better than spending on shoes and dresses, but then I am not sure women can resist the latter, but what do I know. Do get your post count up and upload some pics (of the car of course ;)). Congrats.

let me estimate too, hehe.

-$12g a year for car pmt ofcourse
-$2g approx. for a year of full coverage
-480. a month on gas, thats $60 twice a week a month, x12 (a year)=$5,760. approx.
-$300 approx. a week to spend, thats about: $1,200.00 a month x12= $14,400.
----------------------------------------------------------
$34,160.00 TOTAL approx.

&&& that is to live OKAY.... $42k-$48k is living luxury. lol. jk.

yah, i dont pay rent so thats a plus plus. besides my amateur credit cards, i only have $200 in bills.... $100 for cellphone and $100 for internet. =]

but we'll see.... lets see what happens 3-6 months from now. O.o

I'm not sure why you just didn't lease the car, but it's still silly to spend that much on a car at your age...and I'm not that old to sound old. I have that much in car payments for 2 cars (both leases since we like newer cars).

I know you don't have any rent now, but in a year? 6 months? Nevermind 4 years from now? You better be hot and then you don't have to worry, lol. Kidding of course.

$34,160.00 TOTAL approx.

Here's the kicker though... $34,160 is about $44,500 in pre-tax money.

So if you make $50k / year (I made that number up)... take away taxes taxes and the costs above and you're left with about $3,850.

Subtract health insurance, and that's the money you have left to invest in your retirement, save up for a house, play with, etc for the year.

To see for yourself, do this (you don't have to post the result):

(annual income x 0.7) - $34160 - $health_insurance = $left_overs

This is rough and assumes 30% in taxes.

yah, i dont pay rent so thats a plus plus. besides my amateur credit cards, i only have $200 in bills.... $100 for cellphone and $100 for internet. =]

That is a huge plus! :D

If rent in your area is $1300 / mo, that's $20k / year (pre-tax) less expenses!

Out of curiousity, I asked BMW of Santa Monica how much a lease on a 328 convertible would be and they wanted $900 / month.

Not sure what kind of crazy calculation they were doing as a 328 non-convertible can be gotten for $300s / month. The E93 isn't worth 3 times more than an E90.

If paying cash, it's a no brainer.

Off the top of my head, a $1000 / month, 5 year loan looks like it should come out ahead of a $900 / month, 3 year lease.

Edit: I have no idea what a E93 328 lease is now... perhaps the dealers stopped gouging?

There is here, but I'm not familiar with her area so I had to make the numbers up! :D

Before I bought my place, I was paying $1300 / month for a 1 bedroom apartment in Redondo Beach.

Irvine didn't look much better when scanning the news paper (I originally planned to get a job there, instead of in El Segundo). Hermosa Beach is probably around the Redondo mark and Manhatten Beach is likely worse.

My apartment, wasn't the cheapest ones around, but they were nowhere near upper tier either.

In my experiance in car buying, most cars have a 10-20 profit margin(even though the salesman will tell you its less). I've always been able to get at least 10% on a brand new car. I just bought a pre-owned 330, 2006 and got 6k off, thats 17%. To get good deals, i usually get kicked out of a couple of dealers, got to find the ones that want to make a deal and sell a car.

mryakan

usually you can get better deals on used than brand new. Not sure if the margin numbers you quote are realistic for new BMWs!

I live in Canada and I received $2300 off of MSRP on mine, paid for the freight, PDI ($1995 - OUCH) and a couple of the government taxes. So yes you did get a fair deal. However, no free car mats? I received winters and summers for free, (is there anything really free)? When you pick up the car, ask where are the car mats, if you are spending 50 big ones, you should at least be getting one set of mats included.

Misktan,

You got 'balls' for a 21 yo girl! Congrats on your ride. Excellent color choice!

I used to live in L.A. and now reside in HK...I paid an equivelant of US$59,000 on my 320i!!! Worse yet, no price negotiations, none of your extras! So as long as you can afford it, why not $1000/mo? I had always regreted not getting the first gen. M3's back when I was about your age.

Congrats on your new car.

many dont agree on your age but i do, im 22 and although my payments are not that high i say enjoy it while your young.

Im sure taht right now you are not looking for a house or anything so by the time your done paying off you baby you might be looking for your house.

as for 1,300$ a month for rent damn! for that much i can have a 2 story house with a pool in my backyard and a two car garage in FL.

enjoy your new car!

My last question is why ask after the purchase if you got a good deal? What if we all said you got ripped off?

I'll stick with you don't need a $1,000/month car 21...what you think you can afford and what you can are 2 different things.

thanks for all you guys response. everyone is entitled to their own opinion and its just nice to hear from you. =]

i thought i did a pretty good job getting $2,800-off but i was looking at $3,500.-off, HAHA! =P

personal: YES, i am young and verrrry fortunate to even drive a nice car like this, but I have a thing for cars and I spend alot of money on them too. Before this car, I had an 03 Benz so I've always spent alot of money on cars.... I have a pretty good & strong family foundation and like i said, a good, stable job.... I'm 99% sure I will be fine. I'm a hard worker, and I believe that I should work hard for the things I like and want. I'm not like the usual 21 years old.. I'm not into clubbing and drinking and blowing all my money on nightlife activities, I'm not looking at buying a house because my grandma bought me a condo (a will thing) and I'm hoping that when I get married, I get married to a rich guy, HAHAHAAA! ;] jkjk. Yaaah, with this new car, I'm not gonnabe able to save alot of money for future stuff but I think I'm still young and I'm enjoying my car, so I'm happy!

Well, its fun reading all your feedbacks! I like this forum and I'm glad to be a part of the bimmer world, lol. I will post pics. up this Sunday, my day off so don't forget to check back and see it kkk. I get soo excited talking about it, I really like it, hehe!! Okay, have a nice day, ttyl & take care! =]

If you want cheaper realestate and don't mind the 4+ meters of snow (~14 ft) we got so far this year (http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/wintersnowfall), move here to Ottawa. Added benefit is that rush hour traffic here is a joke compared to major US cities and you can drive faster than in the US and there are less police out there to catch you, so more chances to enjoy your car.

Yeah but in Ottawa you can't have 70/80/90+ degree weather year round, beach 10 mins away and some other bonus things especially this time of the year...

thats also true, but again miami is i believe one of the most expensive areas to live in FL!!

Not sure if that is a typo or a mockery, but eitherway, yeah surprisingly, our summers can be pretty hot (and muggy too), so 90+ is not unheard of, although 70s/80s is more the norm. No ocean front though, but many close by lakes and Thousand Islands are only an hour drive. You won't believe the fancy speed boats you see on the St. Lawrence. And yeah, the Montreal F1 is only 2 hr drive away, but I have yet to attend one :(, every year I say this year.
But as I eluded to, winters suck bigtime unless you love skiing.

Just to bounce back to the topic if a 21 y/o buying a new car:

I say do what you want.... If you can or cant afford it, its up to you... I know this- you'll never regret driving a new BMW!!! For all we know you have a ton of money saved up... So yea, I definitely dont judge you for buying a brand new car @ 21... We dont know the ENTIRE scope of your situation.. Im with you, I dont really party, drink, or any of that-- and I decided when I could afford it I would buy the car I want... Im 25 now, and about 2 months ago bought a 2006 330i and the only regret I have is NOT being able to drive it when I was 21!!!
And as for the deal you got... that seems to be about the going rate for a brand new 328i convertible...
Enjoy it, congrats, do your thing girl....

And I pay 1175 for rent... Up in the portland area =)

That's strange because the property values in Riverside is generally much lower than most LA/OC areas. Sounds like some serious price gouging going on.

$1300 / month can get you a 1 bedroom apt, about 1 block from the beach in south redondo (as of about 2 years ago).

I heard that rental prices are rising, though... maybe I'm out of touch with the changes in the last 2 years?

you did pretty good. That's a lot of money for a car for anyone, regardless of age, but if it's what makes you happy, then go for it!

I've seen some of those apartments, lol. That's a trade off of old and nasty versus new.

Back when we were renting, our first apartment in Rancho Cucmonga was $1200, Chino Hills was $1500, and when we moved out it was going up to about 1800-1900 a month...which is why we bought a house. I often asked myself why the hell rentals were so expensive out here too. But most of the places are new out here so I guess you trade off location for "new" apartments.

There are older people that act like teenagers, and vice-versa. It all comes down to maturity level. I wouldn't have been able to handle a $50k+ car at 21, but you probably can. And if that's the case you definitely deserve it.

Regarding entertainment, driving an e93 is entertaining enough. All you did was re-allocate your entertainment budget.

Congrats!!!

don't think you have enough posts to upload photos yet. Try it, go to advanced, then you should see manage attachments, the rest should be self explanatory. If you don't see the "manage attachments" option, then you need to start spam posting to get your post up. I think you can use the testing sections to get your posts up, but I am not 100% sure that counts towards your post count, give it a try anyway (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=123).

I agree, if I could change it I would. If anyone asks, I support reducing the limit to a resonable count, say 25 or so. The admins probably want to prevent spam and avoid having some malicious users do drive by spam uploads and increase the server storage which costs $$.

I was using mild language to describe possible spammers, but I'll put it out clearly now. I retract my earlier comment about allowing people to post junk here or elsewhere. Starting now, invalid/junk posts will be deleted and that will reflect on your post count (i.e. a deleted post is taken out of your post count). So try to contribute positively and when you have enough posts you can share your photos. I will not make any exceptions anymore.
Thanks for bringing that shortcoming to light.

Sometimes forums act like they are the only one in town. These places EXIST because they have members, and then they can use that to sell advertising. So cater to your MEMBERS.

Sometimes forums act like they are the only one in town. These places EXIST because they have members, and then they can use that to sell advertising. So cater to your MEMBERS.
You must mean talk to an "admin". I'll PM Kevlar and see what he says on this matter. As I said, I am with you on this issue but don't have the power to do anything but ask like any other member.

Whatever he's called. I just don't want to see this place start to be iron-fisted on stupid things. If there is a problem like people posting to get their count high enough to post pics.....CHANGE the rule. Pissing members off isn't a good business model. And remember this forum IS a business.

I know, but you are talking to the wrong man and preaching the choir :D. You said you PM-ed Kevlar and I did too, so let's wait and see what he says. You may opt to go another route (e.g. sign a petition) but it is not something I endorse. Again, let's wait for his response 1st.

I made a request to the admin to "promote" your account. Same for GOZ 2 11. In exchange you promise not to spam from now on :D. When the request is fulfilled, I will delete all spammed post, so your post count will drop.

EDIT: You guys should be able to upload photos now. Please give it a try.

IF you get a new car you don't get plates. There is a temp registration in the front window. It is very strange, and people abuse that all the time...driving without plates for longer than they are allowed.

Front plates suck, but you'll get used to them.

Not sure if you know, but in CA they're required by law.

If you take them off you're testing your luck as every single cop you pass gets to decide if he wants to pull you over and ticket you for it.

To date, everyone I know at work who's tried to avoid putting on a front plate has gotten enough tickets that they all gave up and ended up putting it back on.

Depends where in FL, for $1300 in Miami you get an apartment or an ok house if you’re lucky....

1300/month is about as cheap as is possible for a rental here. Maybe a little less if you are willing to do the 109st and 1st avenue thing (ghetto). But then you parky our BMW on the street with assorted crap-carts.

Yeah, but salaries are a lot higher in NY.

The jobs offers that I received from companies in NY were paying a heck of a lot more than the ones from MI and CA.

Salaries: NY > CA > MI (at least in my experience so far)

I got the same car up in Vancouver and am leasing it for 36 months and paying $1000/month ($120 in tax) and with insurance, gas, etc. it works out to about $1500. I also got the wear and tear warranty for $1000 which covers all dings, dents, tire wear, etc. when I return the car. the car is awesome and as long as you can afford it nothing wrong with it. I had a little Porsche 944 turbo when I was 21 and paying $1200/mo all in. Enjoy the car...I certainly am!!!

Just came across this post. I just bought mine last week (5/8/2008):
328xi
Monaco Blue/Tan Leather
Automatic/Steptronic
Premium Package
Cold Weather Package
Active Cruise
Park Assist
iPod
A few BMW sweathshirts, baseball caps, floor mats, and key chains (freebies).

Came in on the transport the day before I bought it so it was untouched by anyone except the transport driver. Still had the transport cosmolene and wrap on it.

Nothing special about that though. But the best part was I got $3000 off the price. All it takes is to do your homework on the internet (Edmunds, Cars.com, etc). I emailed a total of 8 dealerships in my area and told them the best price gets the sale, cash purchase, no trade in. I didn't need a test drive and didn't want to spend more than 30 minutes with a salesman so just bottom line it. And I told everyone that I was buying on 5/9 no matter what. The second best price was $2800 off.

So to everyone thinking of buying, don't be afraid to ask for best price and don't be afraid to walk away if it's not what you want (within reason).

Hi All, just found out my car is waiting to be shipped... any day now!
328i convertible
Metallic Green
Saddle Brown leather
Manual Trans
Premium Pkg
Cold Weather Pkg
Sport Pkg
Navigation (not really an option for me, more like a neccessity!)
Comfort Access

Don't see hardly any Green BMWs. Is there a reason for that? Hope not, I love the color myself and am happy I ordered it!

i'm going to have to say it was a bad idea. no, im not just a jerk, I've experienced almost the same situation.

If you can barely afford 1k a month on a car, you're going to surely regret it in the next 4-6 months. i bought a s500 at your age and regretted it everytime i looked at the damn car. a car is a car and money can afford things like vacations, or nice living expenses. whatever, the point is whoever else reads this, please keep yourself with a low payment unless you can afford a crazy car payment.

When you are 21, have parents that are well off and paying your bills, voice of reason and responsibility is set on mute. Being a girl is just the icing on the cake, most if not all entertainment expenses are picked up by the guys, so basically all of the paycheck is disposable income. Spend it all, enjoy it, you only live once.

hey, just checking back with the thread.... i have been doing pretty good as far as taking care of my business and making that darn payment on time, haha. but for you guy's information, my parents are divorced and both have a new family and small children that they have to care for. my parents and i see each other only on holidays, okay... i am fortunate to have a grandma who puts a roof over my head, yes BUT everything else is on my own. i do have advantages cause i'm a girl, so going out is a covered expense by the guys.... other things like shopping for myself has been limited but its cool, cause i love my car and i think its soo worth it and thats my sacrifice! so yah, bottom line, im happy!! :]

anyways, i just got my windows tinted, 35% and i think it looks ok. i'm still getting used to it. i will post pics. of it later and you guys can tell me your opinion. overall, i like to read these threads and i like to hear people's opinion so i don't take any offense. its interesting to hear from other's point of view! ;]

I'm right on with you guys here! I bought my 328i brand new at 23 and don't regret anything! I also just bought a house a couple of weeks ago with a mortgage payment less than what I was paying in rent. Looks like you have your housing situation taken care of, so you only live once so why not make the best of it! If you can afford it, do it, in my humble opinion of course.

Oh by the way, I used to live in SJ and I bought mine at Stevens Creek and got a pretty good deal on it.

I just got (one month ago) almost the same car, but no sport package and with steptronic. Sticker was $52,450. I paid $49,000. But I have a friend at the dealer so I would say your deal was good. Only bad thing is I got 1.9% on 60 month loan and probalby should have pressed for the 0.9% but I didnt know BMW was going to offer it that low (it was 3.9% on the website when I bought the car). I wish you had gotten a better rate. 4.9% is NOT bad, but when BMW is down to 0.9% thats too bad they didnt let you know it was that low. Anyway, not a bad deal at all you didnt get taken, be happy with the car. You will learn to like the Navigation once you learn the bells and whistles.
