The camshaft is an apparatus often used in piston engines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston_engine) to operate poppet valves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poppet_valve). It consists of a cylindrical rod running the length of the cylinder bank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_bank) with a number of oblong lobes or cams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam) protruding from it, one for each valve. The cams force the valves open by pressing on the valve, or on some intermediate mechanism, as they rotate
An exhaust manifold or header collects the exhaust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust) gases (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas) from multiple cylinders into one pipe.
A catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine). First widely introduced on series-production (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_production) automobiles in the US (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA) market for the 1975 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975) model year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_year) to comply with tightening EPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Environmental_Protection_Agency) regulations on auto exhaust, catalytic converters are still most commonly used in motor vehicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile) exhaust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas) systems. Catalytic converters are also used on generator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_generator) sets, forklifts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forklift), mining equipment, trucks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck), buses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus), trains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train), and other engine-equipped machines. A catalytic converter provides an environment for a chemical reaction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_reaction) wherein toxic combustion by-products are converted to less-toxic substances.
