Power Locking- Auto vs Selective
There is a screen in Carsoft where it allows one to choose between the Power Locking options of either Auto or Selective. I've tried both, but all doors (2000 and 2002 e39) still lock at 5 mph. Anybody have any luck getting this Carsoft feature to work?
My understanding is that only dealer can program key for "comfort options".
Guessing same is also true for attempting to get key to unlock all four doors on first press of button rather than just the driver's door?
Gordon
Similar question: I tested this last night on a 6.5.06 Carsoft version on a 1999 540it for an interested forum member. I read the car's coding and it showed selective locking and lock on movement as enabled. I deselected those options and wrote the coding to my car. No effect upon testing/driving.
Do I have to unlock the OBD first to get the selected Carsoft options to in this case, deactivate?
Thanks! :cool

Hi David,
WIth your softwares at shared site, I have succeeded to make my v6.5 work at last. Thanks for your great help and I owed you a lot.
I have couple more questions though;
Carsoft v6.5 will not be any use to you if your car is later than 2004.
Your best bet is to buy a Carsoft v6.5 interface and cable set off Ebay, then get Carsoft Ultimate Home v7.3 (the new software is fully compatable with the v6.5 interface). v7.3 covers models up to 10/2007 (i.e includes E63 & E64) and includes updates for the next 2 years. Buying your interface off EBay shaves about Euro$100 off the price of the software and makes it a fairly attractive option.
1. Where can I buy v7.3?
2. Do you happened to know Carsoft MB(V7.5) forum similar to this one as I have lots of troubles with it. I have a friend runs car repair shop whose major customers are BMW and MB owners.
Bset regards,
Kay

Carsoft Ultimate is available in both Pro (covers BMW's & Mercedes with coding functionality) and Home (v7.3) versions. Both are only available directly from Carsoft via their website. I do not know of any forums offering support for Carsoft MB v7.5.

Thanks for your great guide on how to get this to work.
I got it working on my 2001 525iT within 30 minutes. I used a generic USB-serial interface and I'm running Vista home on my laptop.
Only thing that does not work is the live DME data, everything else works. I might try it in the engine port, I have only use the cabin port so far.
I've had several check engine and check tranny faults in the last 3 months so I was expecting a lot of codes but there were not many. I cleared them all and got the check engine again this morning.
These were the codes:
30
243
There were no explanations so i googled and found that they are:
30 - Ignition coil cyl3
243 - Misfire cyl6 detected
Pretty strange... I will check the plugs I guess. If anyone has any ideas what this could be please PM me I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks again.

Hello David and all,
First thing hope you are all OK in OZ what with the fires and things.
Well since I was last in contact (during last year) I have attempted to get my V6.5 working but still get a message saying that there is a problem with the connection/cable. As my version of 6.1 works I have not "Needed" the 6.5 but I have decided that I will get it to work.
The program runs and it is cracked and is sp1 so to all intents and purposes it should work, in fact untill I ask it to read it behaves just like V6.1.
Anyway to get to the point I have been reading this thread for the last 2 hours or so to see if I can pick up on anything and I think I have, my 20 pin adaptor to the 16 pin obd adaptor appears to be a pin short,
obd 20pin
4 19
5 missing 19
7 missing 20+17
15 15
16 14
Now this works as I say with 6.1 but is this the reason it wont work with 6.5?
I will try jumpering pins 4+together on the obd plug and see what happens.
Bye the way my 6.1 will work with a usb/serial adapter as well as the 232 port, just thought you would like to know.
would like to hear your thoughts.
regards
rrosscoe
David Mc

rrosscoe,
16 pin OBD connector pin assignments are Pin 4 = Chassis Ground, Pin 5 = Signal Ground, Pin 7 = K Line ISO 9141-2, Pin 15 L Line ISO 9141-2, Pin 16 = Battery +.
BMW 20 Pin round connector Pin 4 = Shield, Pin 19 = Ground, Pin 20 = K Line TXD, Pin 17 = K Line TXDII, Pin 15 = L Line RXD, Pin 14 = Battery +.
The OBD Port provides data access compliant only to OBD requirements, whereas the 20 Pin factory data Port provides access to all modules. If Carsoft v6.5 has been properly cracked and SP1 is functional (i.e. version shows v6.5.06) chances are that your USB to serial adaptor is not playing the game. The software apparently requires a certain hex address setting only accessable from Com 1. Check your Port Settings via Device Manager and make sure that the corresponding Port has been selected in the "Setting" option of the "Diagnosis Data" drop down menu of the program itself.

Hallo, everyone.
Two days ago I bought my interface from this seller:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=15369721&postcount=54
It was installed with no problems and work through USB-serial adapter.
My car is '93 E36 320i (EU-spec).
So, this is scan result:
http://slike.hr/slika/untitled349.bmp
http://slike.hr/slika/untitled2100.bmp
I can not make contact with DME. Is it because of USB-adapter? Could PCMCIA-serial solve this problem?
What about Aircon error? What does hk14.dxt mean? After I erase error on second scan I get message: Module does not respond.

Hi David,
The problem exists with both the direct serial 232 cable and the usb adaptor cable.
the com ports are com 1 on both setups.
Carsoft v6.5 has been properly cracked and SP1 is functional (i.e. version shows v6.5.06) the only thing that I can see is possibly playing up is the missing pin 5 to the OBD plug. should I just jumper it from pin 4? (OBD)

rrosscoe,
If you are trying to run both v6.1 and v6.5 on the same computer, this is probably the problem. Both versions seem to use the same registry entries and you will probably find that v6.5 is trying to access files that do not exist in v6.1. I was unable to run both versions on one machine until I completely removed v6.1 and reinstalled v6.5 from scratch. Thankfully v7.3 and v6.5 do not share files or registry entries and will both run on the same machine.

hey David.
How is 7.3 working fwell or you? I have not seen your "report" on how it is working for you. (if you posted elsewhere, please let me now!)
Specifically, I am looking for E36 EWS/DME coding and cluster coding. Does 7.3 give you this functionality?
Thanks in advance.
David Mc
02-13-2009, 07:59 AM
Jim,
So far, so good with v7.3. I am still waiting for Carsoft's patch for the ABS/ASC module, so have not done a write up on the software as yet. Whilst functionality seems similar to v6.5 on pre 2003 models, the new software covers BMW and Minis right up to 10/2008 so there is a lot greater range and more updated info, especially for diesel cars. It will align the DME/DDE and EWS on post 1996 cars but I believe cluster coding is only available on the Ultimate Pro v2.0 version.

Hello everybody,
Around a year ago, I bought a carsoft 6.5 interface, promoted to work with 2004 Z4. I wanted to clear an airbag light and change mi. to Km and farenheight to Celsius on my 2004 Z4. I was able to see many ecus and clear errors and everything seemed to perfectly work but was never able to clear the airbag light neither to change mi and Farenheight. Software was telling me it was changed, but in fact it was not. I understood that some major changes happened to some 2004 ecus. Does someone know what was that change ? Can it be CAN or D-CAN bus ? I you look at Bavarian techs, you will be able that their new tool is able to work with newer BMW models but is not yet able to manage Z4 2004 +.
I ask the question because I finally sold my interface and as 7.3 seems to be OK I want to be sure it's really working before buying another interface and software this time.
Thanks in advance to the experts ! Jean

Jean,
Acording to to Carsoft, v7.3 will read your airbag fault codes but will not perform version coding functions (miles to Km, F to C etc.,) for the E85 Z4. Version coding functions are listed only for the E46, E38/E39 and X5.

Thanks David,
I was disappointed with the answer so I looked at information to find more details and I found (under 4.2) in the december 15 release specifications available on their site :
Diagnostic coverage on all new series of vehicles: E46,E60/61, E65/66, E63/64, E90/E91/E92/E93, E87, E83, E85
• i-Drive Setup Instructions with pictures and screenshots :

o Change of Brightness settings
o Change of Languages settings
o Coding of Units settings
o Coding of Steering wheel buttons settings
o Change of RPA settings
o Coding of PDC settings
o Coding of Light settings
o Coding of Power Lock settings
So, I now really wondering what can be done and what can't. May I know where you took your information ? Thanks

I emailed the question directly to Carsoft as the Director has been very responsive to inquiries I have made in the past, so the response I gave you is 100% accurate. The advertising information you downloaded from Carsoft's site relates to Ultimate Pro 2.0 software. v7.3 is the "Home" version and does not have the same functionality.

David, what is the difference between carsoft 6.5 and 7.3? Is it worth buying if you own an 2003 520iAT E39?
Or will carsoft 6.5 do the same jobb as 7.3 for my car?
David Mc
02-18-2009, 06:54 AM
The biggest differences between v6.5 and v7.3 seem to be in the 2003 and later models. Provided you intend to keep your car and are prepared to have to buy more updated diagnostic software in the event that you decide to upgrade to a later model I would probably persevere with v6.5.
v7.3 has the advantage in that it covers models up to 10/2007, is backed with a manufacturer's warranty and will be updated for 2 years.

02-20-2009, 05:00 AM
Check all the fuses for the DDE issue and if they are ok, try running a single diagnosis with the engine running (which will eliminate low battery voltage as a possible cause). This issue is very common when Carsoft is used with some USB to Serial adaptors, which seem to allow access to some modules but not others. If you can try running the software on a machine with a dedicated serial port, I think you will solve the problem.
Patallen, SP1 contains software authentication protection. Since v 6.5 is "Cracked" (i.e. has been hacked to negate security protection) the only way to load SP1 is to run it IMMEDIATELY following installation of v6.5.05, before cracking the software.

I don't have any problem with SP1, I did as you said :)
I tried with another integrated com port laptop, and the issue is nearly the same...
Module does not respond ... BUT : When the 3 leds blink in red, I unplug the com port... wait for the connexion error to come.
It ask me to retry, I plug the com again, and retry, and I can read DDE module !
But need to do the stuff everytime.
and this trick doesn't work with live data
and doesn't work too with my laptop, I have a Express card <-> RS232 adaptor

Hi David,
Sorry but the page I got the information from is really in the Home edition section. Here's the title of that pdf page, which is called
CARSOFT BMW – MINI Ultimate Home V7.3 SPECIFICATIONS
December 15, 2008 Release Specifications
Just to be sure you understand, find here the link : http://www.carsoftinternational.com/bmw73/dloads/AAA%20Carsoft%2073%20Overview.pdf
The Ultimat pro is version 2.0. So if my understanding is not correct, their product definition and web site are anything but clear. The above document is certainly not the related to the Ultimate 2 pro as you mentionned, it's really coming from coverage in the Home Edition called the Ultimate Home V 7.3. If it's not the right coverage, then what's the coverage ? Nobody will spend that amount of money without exact infromation.
I still believe my coverage is good ... it's too clear in the website. Jean

Jean,
As per the advice I forwarded previously you will see that the page you referred to does not indicate that coding functions are available for the E85. V7.3 will perform diagnostic functions for the E85, the list of coding functions refers to models fitted with the IDrive system.
I have made a few suggestions to Carsoft about clarifying certain aspects of their product and they have been receptive but I guess the changes will take a little time to implement.

Run a single diagnostic on each of the modules with errors and read, record and erase the error codes. Run a second diagnostic after this process has been completed so that you can eliminate historical, stored error codes.
When the DME is showing an undefined error, my bet would be that either it is wet or the car battery voltage dropped too much during the diagnostic.

Got it running after another restart..weird, but it's all good now :alright! Thanks for all your help. Is there any place that would have normal value ranges for the live data pages on a 97 e39? Some values I'm familiar with, but not all them, especially ignition angle and vanos. My vanos is late at idle (normal I think) and then early during acceleration. I still can't get into a few modules, but I have the VF Engineering SC kit and I'm assuming some DSE programing has been locked out.

Well, I just called VF Engineering to see if they lock out any modules and they told me that they don't lock out any modules and keep all diagnostics intact.
So why would about half of my modules not respond? I've loaded the cracks from the shared site, I've scanned the car with the key to the on position and also while it was running and the battery charges fine and is never low so I don't know why the modules don't repond. Also I've noticed that the DSE live data doesn't work. The DME and trans live data is fine though.
The modules that work are the aircon or hkl, dme, asc/abs, lcm, airbag, and instrument cluster. The others don't respond. Could it be a relay? I don't have any codes or check engine lights other than the "BF internal instrument cluster error"
What should I do? Any help would really help since I'm dealing with a phantom cold start problem.
Cant get the file from 4shared.com. Do I need a password?

No problem.
The live feed is one of the 'good' things about OBD-II.

James, if you cannot PM me for a password go to your user CP and enable PM's and email and I will send it to you.
Hi David, can you please email me the site and password for carsoft, thanks can y ou also tell me if this will let me enable my alarm?
Smoky please check link above in posting number 818.
Thanks David, got the software with SP1 functioning (i think). I continue to get "diagonostic cable faulty" error. Yes the com ports are configured properly.
I also note that my interface module lights only the power led when connected to the car (large connector under hood). None of the other leds light up ie RS232, K-line? When do these light up?
Any suggestions would be thoroughly appreciated!

Thanks guys, I appericate it.
I am having troubles trying to find out what a code is on my car. I have a peake r5/fcx-3 and the code I am getting is table 19, error code is 8f. Which means DM-TL leak detected. I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out what it means. The only thing that I have found so far is to check the gas cap. ride is 2001 -330i. Thanks for any help!!! BTW I am fairly new to the forums but I would be happy to help anyone with anything i can to return the favors... I am also looking for repair manual on disk or download if anyone can help..
I really enjoy everyones input here, it has been very helpful.. So, many Thanks to all that leave thier comments.

I am looking for a user manual for carsoft 6.5 if there is such a thing
Also, can anyone explain what the special functions are and what a novice like me might use them for

Smoky, this site is helpful for 330i owners http://www.my330i.com/odb2.php but the BMW codes on the bottom of the page need to be entered in decimal rather than hex format (as displayed by your Peake tool) 8f hex is 143 in decimal.
Dean, go to the shared site and download Carsoft troubleshooting tips which is a Carsoft TSB.
Can anyone please shed some light please...After hours and hours...even read all 34 very interesting pages of postings looking for a clue...
I have installed the software including SP1, it appears to run. I have checked my cables they are indeed working, also tried both 20 pin and OBD II connector/cable. However I continue to get "Bad communications" followed by "diagonostic cable faulty" error when I run "Perform Diagnosis". Yes the serial com ports are configured properly in both the BIOS and Carsoft itself. In fact the eror message is consistent even when the car and the interface module are not even connected to the computer! Its like everthing past the rs232 connector is not there!
This leads me to either one of two scenerios. The Software is not installed/loaded/running correctly or the new Carsoft 6.5 interface is faulty.
I also note that out of the five lights on the interface module only the power led illuminates when connected to the car (ie either large connector under hood or OBD II). None of the other leds light up ie RS232, K-line? When do these light up?
I have tried turning the ignition switch on 2-3 times in an attempt to wake things up but, no go.
Any suggestions would be thoroughly appreciated!

Assuming you are not using a USB to serial connector, the symptoms lead to only two possible sources - either your interface/Cable set is bad or you have a bad connection/one or more blown fuses in your vehicle. You should get 4 leds during a diagnostic. Ensure that the 20 pin connector is fully seated and that none of the pins have been pushed back inside the diagnostic socket then check the cables with an ohmmeter to ensure there are no internal breaks, if these 2 checks show no faults, check ALL your fuses with an ohmmeter (eyeballing just doesn't cut it) if ok send the cable/interface back for replacement. This definitely does not sound like a software issue but I have heard of similar problems arising from the use of some USB to serial adaptors.

I have tried again and re-downloaded the files from the link on here provided
the rar file and the sp1 exe and tried using the instructions listed on here
when running the sp1 file i get the message "necesary files not found"
anyone know why they are different to the ones that come with the rar download?
EDIT, I think its sorta working
I have it got to do a live feed, and scan a few of the codes, but most things i get the error MODULE NOT RESPONDING
What gives?.....does this mean my car is not compatible with the software?
Car is E36 1997 M3

The download files are a "cracked" version of the original genuine Carsoft beta version, whereas SP1 only recognises the real deal. Start be decompressing the .RAR files you have downloaded onto your desktop (using WinRAR), then install the program to your hard drive from there. You MUST install SP1 immediately after installing Carsoft and before copying the contents of the "crack" folder or you will have the exact problem you have encountered. Once you have initially installed the program (whether correctly or not), you will have to thoroughly clean your system as per the instructions as once installed, the program leaves resident files in the registry and hard drive of your computer which will negate secondary attempts at installation.

I have been pretty fortunate as I have managed to get almost all of the options to work, except BC/Mid. I have tried several times but no luck. It could be that I am using a serial/USB adapter.
Also, I have tried several times to remove "Selective Locking", and enable "Auto Lock" but I can't seem to get those to work.
Overall, I am very satisfied and really appreciate all of the help/advise from this forum.

Just done a fesh install, and followed the guide to a tee
system restore/clean up,you name it
Still the same
I am only getting 4 coming up as readable, all the others have module errors not responding
using 20pin/interface/rs232 direct into PC tower
anyone have any ideas what i can try?
I put a tester on the battery, and it reads 12v,the help guide says 16v,so am i putting the tester in the correct place?

I found that connecting the reader to the OBDII port (inside car) does not work well on my USA '97 528ia standard. Only 2 modules responded- DME/DDE and EGS. But when I connected to the OBD port in the engine compartment, 9 modules were read. 8 did not repond - SIM, BC/MID, PDC, DWA, CVM, CAS, ZGM and RLS - which is probably expected as I know for sure my car doesn't have MID and PDC. I tried single diagnosis on the others and they still didn't respond. I therefore doubt if the other modules exist in the car.
I was very happy to finally turn off the airbag light which the dealers and indies wanted an hour labor just to reset. The hardware and software for carsoft just cost me $70 off ebay. The most rewarding expenditure on my car other than installing the vanos rings.

Dean, it is normal to have only a few modules respond - my car is a top of the line spec 328i and I only get 5 modules. DME, ZKM and Airbag modules are the most relevant and if the car is an auto you should also have EGS. These are the engine control unit, Central body electronics module, SRS system and gearbox control module, which are the units that control 98% of the systems in your car. ABS/ASC would also be nice but cannot be read on 6 cyl E36's with most Chinese cable sets.

I have recently received a Carsoft 6.5 kit which installed OK but did not properly communicate with my '04 330i.
I have read the instructions in post 7 of this thread, however, I am not sure about the software version I have. I see no references to the SP1 software. Do I have everything I need or do I need more? If so, where can I obtain it?

Heya,
Just wondering, I have an OBDI E36 and I've already read you can apparently read the live data, but I was wondering what you can actually ALTER using carsoft? Can you adjust fuel mixture or idle and basic tuning stuff? I have a real rich fuel mix and it being a pain in the ass but I don't want to hit a chipping or tuning place unless it's the last resort!!
Cheers

ABS/ASC would also be nice but cannot be read on 6 cyl E36's with most Chinese cable sets.
Thanks David :)
Hmm, I am pretty sure abs was one of the modules it has read o.k, i'l have to check next time i plug it in
Someone gave me the cable set,so i dont know they came from

time to get back my money on carsoft thing ;) it is a week end for oil service for my e46 2004/11, at home ...but I tried to reset without success. I did "SI reset/programation" , click on "oil next step" => my e46 did a reset of date ect...but i'm still (-3600kms...)...
what is the right action i miss...

Carsoft 6.5 will not return live data on OBD1 cars (OBD2 only). It also has no facility to perform tuning or performance modifications. V6.5 is also only suitable for cars up to about mid-2004, for later models you will need v7.3 (v7.3.05 is the current version). Since E36's have no service computer, you cannot do a conditionally based service reset and should only use the normal "SI reset" function. To reset the service indicator on an e46, use "SI reset/programation", then read the current value using "SI Status reading" before resetting using the "SI Reset" button.

what do you mean :
"To reset the service indicator on an e46, use "SI reset/programation", then read the current value using "SI Status reading" before resetting using the "SI Reset" button."
why "read the current..." ?
for me "SI Reset" is grey i can't use it...it is because i have e46 11/04 car ?

If the buttons are greyed out I would say that your car is not covered by v6.5 and will require Ultimate v7.3. Try reading the current values and take it from there.

I had the same problem but now working for me. After you've copied the 10 crack files to your installation folder as instructed, you then must delete carsoft.exe, rename carsoft65bmw.exe to carsoft.exe. Launch the program again and click on _______?_________ then Info about CARSOFT5... It should now show the version as "6.5.06".
I did this and no problems.

The answer to your 1st question is right there in my previous post.
What I paid isn't interesting as it was a group-buy price, so won't apply to anyone anymore. These units were build only after the number of people of the group-buy were known. So it wasn't a "stocked" item. And tested before delivered.
But as you say. I went for the GT1 as the Carsoft one can do much, but much isn't enough for me. I want to be able to do anything the dealer can do.
I already had my car diagnosed by someone else before, but he also ran into problems as he could only read certain modules and not the ones that needed to be.

Jackleman, what codes is your DME throwing? From the look of this you have either a vacuum leak, bad ICV or MAF.
The DME is throwing the bad mixture code for both banks, it would seem like even if there was a vac leak/MAF problem/ or ICV problem it would still show adaptation levels, probably max adaptation right? Its definatly running very rich.
David Mc
04-04-2009, 05:27 PM
Exactly, it sounds as though adaptation has been maxed out. Since you have 2 sets of O2 sensors and both banks are affected, the problem has to be in the intake system and since both banks are rich, the DME is trying to compensate for additional air getting into the system. Start by checking the intake boot and listening for an air leak around the intake manifold. If the problem has only occurred since the manifold was replaced, it could be the gasket, hose or pcv system stuck wide open.

You really do not want these (and exact reason I don't have one).
Cables usually only "melt" when there is too much current flowing through one of the wires, ie if you tie an 18awg wire into a 100amp circuit. Since there is purely diagnostic signals traveling through these cables its very unlikely that any real load(high amperage) is present.
Thanks David, yeah i'm in the process of checking for vac leaks right now. The reason I was getting 0 across the board by the way was because I wasnt waiting long enough for the o2 sensors to heat up so the fuel system could run closed loop(use the 02 sensors to determine mixture) Once i waited long enough I could see that as soon as the car closes the loop, the car starts running poorly. Finding VAC leaks suckkssssss!
The weird thing here also is that I have found that the adaptation is maxed in opposite directions for the two banks, one is running fully rich and one is running fully lean...

I would have a look at your MAF as the live data shows that the sensor is receiving 5v but not measuring any airflow. It is a fairly delicate part so tread carefully whilst ckeaning it or you will be up for a replacement. There are plently of hreads on how to clean it in the general forum.

There are literally dozens of hacked versions of Carsoft v6.5 around which have varying degrees of functionality from 0% upwards. Some versions already include an adaptation of SP1 and most seem to be in German. The version on the shared website has good functionality and is in English, which makes reading the code definitions a bit easier, but a list of OBD2 (Post 1996) DTC definitions is a very handy accessory.
DeanH, the big hint is on page 1 of your live data - Airflow sensor signal voltage is 5v and measured airflow is 0 kg/hr. Either the MAF is not cutting it or your engine was not running as the sensor signal voltage is normally about 1v and airflow 14-15 kg/hr for most 6 cylinder engines.

Dont ask how but I used the Bavarian Autosport Faultcode reader istruction manual and Code charts and it looks like it makes sense this is what I got for BMW E46 318i
2781 - Camshaft Sensor inlet
285E - VVT -Control unit internal failure
285A - VVT Actuator Monitoring
2865 - Power supply limit
Makes sens if the Camshaft sensor fails(2781) it will see it as a falure (285E) and the monitoring wont be able to take place(285A) and there for limit the power(2865)
What would you recon
And somtimes the EML light will come on and some times not when this happens
Yes I confirmed it today. Cleared all the codes drove the car and no errors. Then I unpluged inlet cam sensor, ran the Diagnostics and code 2781 came up then I conected the sensor again and disconected the exhaust cam sensor and code 2782 came up with code 27C1 - master camshaft sensor

Iceman, you are correct in deducing that one error will cause cascading faults in secondary system sensors. Carsoft reads codes in decimal, whereas Peake tools read in hexadecimal values. Converting between the two is easy amd can be done manually or by inputting the codes into the calculator provided with Windows and using the scientific function to select what you would like to convert the values to (i.e. to convert decimal to hex, select dec then input the decimal value and press hex - the hexadecimal value will be displayed). Remember that Carsoft v6.5 is only good for cars up until early 2004. The codes you have looked up in the Bav tool manual are for late model BMW's, so I assume that your E46 318 is on the upper end of Carsoft v6.5 diagnostic capability range.
DeanH, run a diagnostic and let me know what codes your car is throwing, I have an OBD2 list for the S52 and can give you the code definitions. There is no fault code 09 for either the S50 or S52 engine, which is why Carsoft has not defined the code.

Dean, cleaning the MAF probably rectified the problem but the car will run like a dog for a little while as it attempts to re-learn and optimise its adaptation settings. Drive it around for an hour or so, then see how it feels.

Start by accessing your system folder and use Device Manager to ensure the serial port is enabled, then check the Diagnose data/Setting menu in Carsoft to ensure that it is set for Com1 (assuming that this is the address of your serial port).

I use a USB adaptor because I didn't have serial port on my laptop
I didn't find a adaptor with PCMCIA serial card:mad
they wrote in instructions ,doesn't work with USB to serial adaptor?!

Any recommendations on where to buy the cables sets these days?
Liquidsunshine

OK, so I've been reading for hours, and I did get the software to install and run which is GREAT!! THANK YOU DAVID!
I get the same situation as page 3, post 51, the modules don't respond, yet I can reset the service interval. I checked all the fuses and made sure the ign was on and etc. per post 54. The only other choice in post 54 (which I assume is a response to 51) is bad cables.
I have two sets of cables, one plugs into the 20 pin, and the other into OB2. I get the same diagnosis with either cable and either port. The cables are brand new, and of course tough to "try different ones", so I am hoping someone has other ideas... My main goal is to reset the airbag light.
Help?? :eyecrazy

Assuming you are using a correctly cracked version of Carsoft v6.5, if you are having trouble accessing your cars' modules, the most likely causes (other than bad cables or fuses) are:-
1. The version of Carsoft you are using is v6.5.05 in lieu of v6.5.06. This can be rectified by following Step 2 in Post #54 of this thread.
2. You are using a USB to serial adaptor rather than a dedicated serial port (adaptors are problematic, some work, some don't and some don't perform all functions). The only true cure for this is to use a true serial port or to liaise with someone who has had success with a particular type of USB adaptor or PCMCIA card.
3. If you are using a true serial port, the serial port on your computer may have been disabled to conserve memory (use "Device Manager" to check the status and enable your serial port).
4. Check the "Setting" option of the "Dianose Data" drop down menu in the Carsoft program to ensure that it is set to and matches Com1 of your computer's serial port.
5. Run the engine of your car to ensure the alternator is maintaining sufficient battery charge (minimum 12+ volts at the diagnostic connector - not at the battery terminals which is subject to voltage drop through the car electrical system).
6. Attempt to access each module via a "single diagnosis" - Start with the DME as every (petrol) BMW has one.
7. Download and follw the "Carsoft Troubleshooting Guide" from the shared website.

Thanks David,
You are really helping us here!! Yeah, I'm running 6.5.06 per your original instructions on a serial port.
Hmm, I'm confused about the "run the engine" suggestion. Are you saying that I should run the engine during the test? I do have a good battery that maintains a good enough charge to spin the starter nice and fast, and it doesn't droop while I leave the key on for extended testing, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check the voltage at the connector anyway. Is it possible to do damage if I touch the wrong pin with a volt meter?
I did try to access the air bag module as an individual test - didn't respond, but I'll try DME and see what that does.
Also, What do the LEDs on the Carsoft mid-cable box indicate? There may be one that remains red. I don't remember which one, because that detail didn't dingaling until after I unplugged everything, but this could be a clue. If it is true, I think it is the LED closest to the computer end of the box.
I'll check your other suggestions tonight and let you know. I'd sure like to have my airbags back before the weekend when I'm taking a 1200 mile freeway trip.
THANKS!!

AAARRRGH!!
Help Mr. Wizard! OK, there is one thing that I haven't done, and that's pull out the ECU and clean all the contacts, which I am willing to do, but it seems like it may not be the problem because I am seemingly getting communication and I'm having trouble finding the 3M cleaner suggested. I have above 12V at pins 14 and 16, and I have 11.5V at pin 15, and the other pins check out fine for voltage and ground. When I run the diagnostic, it thinks for about 3-4 minutes before it gives me the "module does not respond!" message. It's the same message for any module that I try.
One suspicious activity that I see is that while watching the LEDs on the Carsoft box, I see the power light on green, the reset maintenance light off, the pin 20 and pin 17 lights mostly green but flash to red occasionally, but pin 15 light remains red always.
So, does a red light mean no data? What's up with that? Is that the indication that I need to pull the ECU?
Also, what's "the CAN" mentioned in the Carsoft troubleshooting guide? How would I check that?
Thanks for your help!

I ran Carsoft on a 96 318ti today and got errors until I tried running the engine whilst the diagnostic was in progress. Even though voltages may look okay, as you know the diagnostic takes a little time to run and the voltage often dips below the threshold. Running the engine or hooking a battery charger to the car whilst you run a diagnostic prevents the voltage drop and will often cure the problem. The LEDS on the interface change colour according to data flow, by the sound of it, your interface is ok. Make sure that the 20 pin plug is properly pushed in as this is also often the cause of comms problems. If this fails to get the software to read your data, go to the shared website and re-read the installation instructions, particularly if you originally installed the program from a disk or performed a re-installation without purging the entire original program first.
CAN = Controller Area Network, this is the way in which your modules are interconnected and communicate between each other.

Thanks David,
Yeah, I'm pretty sure my voltage is up, I had a charger on it at the time of the test. As far as I know I've done everything per the instructions, purging my computer and bla bla. I have a neighbor with an E46, I'll see if I can talk him into letting me try it out on his car to see if it's the car or the software. I'm still thinking about that pin 15 LED that stays red whether the key is off or on, or software running or not. I'd like to see if it's like that on my neighbor's car.
Thanks for your help. I might be enough of an expert to answer some of these questions myself by the time I'm done with this!

Hello everyone,
I recently got Carsoft to work with my 1999 BMW M3 perfectly! All I would suggest is that you follow David MC's steps word-for-word. I appreciate the help David.
So I've had a check engine light and an airbag light on for a while. I ran a scan and saw these results....
__________________________
Airbag module: ERROR
16 Belt Switch, Driver Side
__________________________
DME/DDE Module: ERROR
252 Tank Ventilation System
Suction Fault
228 Mixture Deviation: Bank 2
Cylinder 4-6
227 Mixture Deviation: Bank 1
Cylinder 1-3
254 Tank Ventilation System
Large Volume Leak Air Leak
__________________________
I can clear the codes but the CEL will turn back on in a day or so. The airbag light seems to turns back on in a matter of minutes. My fuel efficiency and acceleration seem to be compromised.
A couple weeks back, before I had Carsoft, I brought the car in to a BMW specialist to have them run a scan and give me the results. They found the same codes above. For the seatbelt, they said I might need to replace the drivers' seatbelt buckle unit. I still would like to make sure it's not a simple wiring problem before replacing the unit. Do these units have a tendency to fail?
They said I had a misfire because the engine was running a little low on oil(I typically give it 2 quarts of oil per month to sustain the correct level, apparently it has a minute blow-by problem, 135k miles), so the valves started to "float", causing an inappropriately burned air/fuel mix and a misfire.
Finally, they told me I had some kind of ventilation system problem with the fuel tank. They did a smoke pressure test, and found no leaks. They didn't pinpoint the problem, but speculated that the fuel pressure sensor was faulty and should be replaced. I still want to be sure this is the true problem before replacing it.

Carsoft v6.5 is a pirated copy of the original Beta version of Carsoft v6.5 and covers BMW's only up to about mid-2004. V6.5 will never be upgraded and carrys no manufacturer's support. V7.3.5 is the latest version of Carsoft (also known as Carsoft Ultimate Home Edition). It is the genuine article and carrys full manufacturer's support and will continue to be upgraded. Carsoft v7.3.5 resembles and functions similarly to Carsoft v6.5, but covers both BMW's and Mini's up until October 2008.

BMW1999M3-
The seat belt switch is in the seat belt receptacle, sometimes called seat belt tensioner (the female part of the plug) and is a very common fault. It will turn the airbag light back on right now. It's part of the SRS system because it's a pyrotechnic device that blows up when the airbags blow and it tightens your seatbelt. It's really easy to replace after you buy it, but the buying phase is a little more difficult. It will cost you between $150 and $200. Many say that BMW is the place to get one, but Pelican parts and Bavarian Autosport both advertise them. Your airbags aren't working if you let your little light is shine...
Good luck on the other things...

Here are my questions, if someone can answer them - I'll post back with an entire TUTORIAL on how to use the software.
1. Will this work on a 95 M3?
2. What cables do I need to buy, and where?
David Mc
05-01-2009, 08:24 AM
MannyJ, unless you have an on board computer to restore your language settings, this may be a dealer issue as neither Carsoft v6.5 or INPA v5.02 have the facility to change coding settings on an E32.
Vibes, Carsoft covers the year model, but being OBD1, you will not get live data. You may as well get a geniune Carsoft v7.3 cable set as the authorised US dealer offers a good deal and can also supply v7.3.5 software and USB adaptors if you want to upgrade. Non-genuine cables can be sourced only via direct access to aftermarket websites like one stop electronics in Hong Kong as they no longer sell on EBay.

Code 22 is a fault detection on the injector for cylinder 3 on the S52 engine. The DME sets an internal flag whenever a short to ground, short to battery or disconnection between the DME output and injector occurs. Check your wiring harness.

As you probably know, v6.5 is a pirate copy and is sometimes a bit quirky, it usually throws the correct codes though and you can just look them up on the OBD2 code sheet.

I bourght carsoft on ebay the other week and with the help on this thread got it working 1st time £52 all in, a credit to David Mc, cheers!
I noticed a couple of things in the live data I hope someone can shead some light on:
-With the engine off shoud i be able to see the throttle position sensor change value if i press the pedal down? Single diagnosis does not give error code.
-Should lambda voltages be fluctuatng by the same amount when warm?
-Could there be any reason for my mass air flow sensor reading 0kg/s when engine is idling.
My car is a bitch to drive at the moment when cold, and feels down on power even when up to temperature. Help on the above appreciated!

The values do change during live diagnosis, but the refresh rate is very slow, so you will need to hold the setting for about 10 seconds ("blipping" the throttle may not show up). What codes show on the total diagnosis and what is the year, model and engine fitted to your car?

Ok, weird stuff is going on with my live data...
The mass air flow is signal is a function of throttle pedal position. ie. is zero when not pressing the pedal down and reads 190 when pedal fully down. (engine off).
It seems that the signals are in the wrong order or something.
The numbers arn't even ball park, like air temp 150degrees. Battery voltage 2V etc..
Anyone else have similar experiences?
I think the diagnositcs is working correctly, but with the live data playing up my confidence in it is reduced somewhat. I have error codes 44 and 19 on my DME. Anyone know what they are?

Cragg, I have not used this particular interface, but would say that it is for use with Carsoft. 5 pins on the diagnostic connector is normal but the only time I have ever encountered the types of live data readings you have received is when the interface was connected via a USB adaptor. Carsoft is VERY fussy about its connections and there is no substitute for a dedicated serial port.

David, that is just the info I needed :cool
So this sensor must be faulty then and needs replacement? Do these sensors fail for no reason! The car has never been crashed or anything on the left side. Did have a crash on the front last year in which the drivers airbag was changed/seat tensioner etc..
My husband had a look under the left front seat and could see 2 sensor type thingys, is it the grey colour (color ;)) sensor or the one surrounded by a black metal cage?

Hi David,
I've tried it with on a laptop with a serial port and get the same weird behaviour.
My thinking is that the interface is for PA Soft, as it only has 2 led's and looks similar to the PA soft interface boxes.
Possible?
Or would a PA Soft interface not work at all with carsoft?
Many thanks for your help on this.
David Mc

Melanie, sensors such as the passenger seat occupancy mat (which is subject to wear) or that are exposed to dirt and/or water ingress can fail. In my experience in many cases though it is due to dirty or poor electrical connections which can be repaired by disconnecting the sensors and cleaning the terminal blocks with a good electrical contact cleaner. I am not familiar with your car, but the side impact sensor I would imagine is more likely to be mounted on the 'B' pillar or inside the door of your car. Download a copy of the BMW Electrical troubleshooting Manual for your model from here http://www.wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm (remember that this manual is for U.S. models and so your sensors are probably located on the opposite side of the vehicle to what is shown in the manual) and use the manual to locate the suspect sensor. Remember - DO NOT WORK ON THE SRS SYSTEM UNLESS THE BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED AND THE SYSTEM COMPLETELY DISCHARGED.
Cragg, I am only aware of one PA Soft interface that works with Carsoft, and it is a custom-built unit. Commercial interfaces do not have this capability.

Sly bump.
Does anyone know if this interface should work with carsoft 6.5?
Theres only 5 pins and it looks like a PA soft interface, only 2 LED's.

Diagnostics and Live data work (they gove numbers) but the live data numbers are not believable.
I just want to know if I should buy another interface.
Hi Dave MC, could you PM details of carsoft & cables ? thanks

The answers to all software related questions can be found here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14972175&postcount=607 Gatsby740il has provided this thread as a guide to interface selection http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=981381 I originally used (and still use) this interface http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14807636&postcount=51 but in my view there is no substitute for the genuine Carsoft interface, which is now available from CarsoftWest (Carsoft's U.S.) agents on EBay (EBay user id "toolbox2661") seperately at a reasonable price.

Ok a while back I had a few codes when the EML light came on and now the car has no midrange power and the code 285A came on my carsoft diagnostic.
So we took it to BMW to confirm and you wont belive this is what the prinout said. and they did the diagnostic for free.
DME - 285A DME: Variable valve gear - monitoring servomotor - direction-of-rotation detection - Fault currently present - Servomotor B1214_NGVMO
So U can use the codes of the Bavarian fault code reader are quite acurate

Hello,
I´ve loaded the carsoft.rar from David MC and followed his step-by-step instruction to install the software. I still get no connection to the modules. I´ve tried three different Software Versions and a laptop with original rs232 port.
My configuration: WinXP with seriell-express-card with rs232 port and the same interface as David MC have.
Has someone a solution?
David Mc
05-29-2009, 04:15 AM
sirtaifun,
What error messages are you receiving? It is normal to only have access to between 3 and 8 modules, depending on model. Make sure that the engine is running whilst attempting a diagnostic or low battery voltage may interrupt the connection.
sirtaifun

David MC
Carsoft tries to initialize the connection. After 4 tries or so it gives up and write "Module does not respond". I have the engine off and I use the OBD in the car.
I trie to single diagnose AIRBAG cause I´ve the airbag-error light on.
Thank´s for your help.
David Mc
05-29-2009, 05:27 AM
Try running a single diagnosis on the airbag module alone, if it still does not respond, begin by checking all your fuses.

I installed carsoft per Dave Mc Instructions, no problem, great instructions. Carsoft is install on program list under the start menu. When I click the 'Start' / All Programs / Carsoft then the BMW icon its opens up carsoft with black background screen. When I click BMW v6.5 icon in the top right corner it looks for an activation code.
Is there a code I need to use to activate this ?
David Mc
05-29-2009, 08:28 AM
If the software asks for an activation code, ether it is not the version from the shared website or has not been properly loaded and cracked. The whole point of the crack is to allow access to the program without requiring an activation code.

05-29-2009, 09:24 AM
I installed it from the shared folder, BUT Just figured out if I go directly into the BMW folder using 'My Computer' and double click on the renamed CARSOFT file then it opens up.
But it wont open up from the CARSOFT folder in 'All Programs' Is that normal ?

I´ve carsoft up and runnin´. The trick is to use the obdII port under the hood. The problem with the obdII port under the wheel is that pin18 is not lined through. But carsoft need this to get connected to the modules.
My configuration to get online to the car: Notebook Lenovo N500 with serial-express-card with rs232(com1) port and the carsoft interface that David Mc have, WinXP SP3.
One special is that I run a carsoft-version 6.5.06 that must not be installed. You can run it from the folder. Unfortunately it is in german.
Maybe that solve the problem with the cracked files. If anyone need them just mail.
At last I thank you for your help. Keep up the good work.
David Mc
05-29-2009, 02:30 PM
Beatty, when you use "Explore" to view the files in your "Carsoft/BMW" folder, you will probably see 2 files with yellow "CS V6.5" icons. You should be able to open the program by double clicking on either one. Identify the icon that opens the program normally and delete the other one, making sure that the file name of the icon you retain is CARSOFT .

Hello Bimmer fellas
its been a while since my last post
it started with the "wire not connected" error
and ever since it hasnt worked
it didnt work with the serial/usb adaptor, so i bought the serial/pcmcia adaptor
the program runs, thats no problem, only it doesnt see the wire
with the serial/pcmcia adaptor i have noticed that
the 2 green LEDs on the interface light up, but "very very weak" its almost impossible in daylight time to notice
they are not coming full bright as to say, power is on
i suspect something is physically wrong with either the inteface or the obd2 wire, i did already check the wire from the interface to the card for continuity and its fine
to troubleshoot the interface and the obd wire ill need a wiring or schematic diagram
does anyone have such a thing?
i bought my carsoft from ebay and cant contact the seller, so i think im screwed on that side :(
thanks in advance for your help boys
BTW this is the interface i've got

I have been using Carsoft V6.5 for a while now but have heard there is a version 7 now. Can you update the software etc and still use the same interface unit. If so, do you know how???

If I'm not mistaken, the new Carsoft uses a dongle as a hardware key. I may have read that wrong..but I'm fairly certain that's the case.

06-03-2009, 04:19 PM
Correct, the new version is security dongle protected so you cannot upgrade from v6.5, but you can use the same interface.

Can someone please advise on this issue.
Carsoft V6.5.6; ERROR; "The Diagnostic Cable Reports :--> Bad Communication"
I have two sets of BMW compatible interface V6.5 and with both stes I get the same error. I get the same error if no cable is connected. I have tried various carsoft downloads and all have installed flawless. The las version was the shared version from DaveMc and installed per intructions on a clean newly installed XP with both modem and WIFI cards disabled. I don't know if I have a bad interface or if the software is intalled improperly. I have also tried this on two vehicles; 2001 325i and 2002 325i via OBD II under the steering wheel.
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thank You.
David Mc
06-04-2009, 04:03 AM
Go to the shared website and download Carsoft Troubleshooting tips. If you are attempting to use the software via an OBD port, you need to ensure that the cap is installed on the 20 pin diagnostic port under the hood as the cap is fitted with jumpers that transfer power to the OBD port. Diagnostics are always best performed directly via the 20 pin BMW port rather than an OBD outlet. I would also suggest that you check continuity on the cables supplied with your interface.

40 pages later and I think I solved my problem. Well, first, thank you David for all of your efforts. It is people like you that make life for the DIYer bearable. Again, thank you.
You know its funny, as I read through all of the pages on this thread, I would laugh and say to myself " Dont these guys pay attention or read?" Ahh...but Karma wanted to play a joke on me and teach me a lesson at the same time. I purchased a Carsoft cable set about a year ago and have had great difficulty making it work. I cant think of how many times I wiped out my hard drive to reload the program,Charged my car battery, cleaned all connections including the ecu, multimetered just about everything and even a prayer or two and nothing. I got the same "Bad Connection Check cable". After reloading the program using Davids site (which by the way was a breeze to work with) I dug through my toolbox to look for my cables which have been collecting dust for quite some time. Excited that I might be able to finally read codes for my car I rushed out in 96 degree heat and hooked up my computer.......and......."bad connection". Once again dissappointed I sat down and started reading further in this thread. While reading, I saw a picture of the interface.........which looked just like mine, so I never gave it a thought. Until, I looked at my interface that was sitting next me. It looked similar but instead of reading 6.5 it read "scanner V1.3.5". Which, if I am not mistaking any further is the interface for the Pa Soft program. All this time I thought it was the Carsoft interface just a different version number (duh). I figured since I had a laugh at some of the posts on here that it would only be fair for everyone to get a laugh at my expense as well. Ok....you can stop laughing now...lol. I will try to attach a pic of the interface. Can someone please verify that this is the wrong interface. In addition, since I have already spent the money I guess I can try the Pa soft software. Does anyone know of a reliable source (as good as Davids)for the software? Lesson learned....thank you all.

The 20 Pin Diagnostic Connector is located under a captive black screw on cap (about 2 inches in diameter) on the rear of the right (passenger side on US cars) front shock tower, adjacent to the battery jump start terminal.

Yes, I believed that to be the case but unlike the OBD2 scan tools, it is not clear to me which entries are these. If I could find a manual that described each entry I'd be all set. The alternative is for someone to let me know the exact entries to look for.
Thanks, appreciate the help. Once decoded, I'll post some photos with text

gtxragtop, fuel trim is reflected by the adaptation values. Are you looking for specific data in an effort to map a DME or just looking to develop an understanding of how the values are calculated and what inputs are used? I can send you a brief explanation of the theory, but do not have the factory DME mapping data.
sadiego1, I do not have the BMW ETM for your vehicles but I am aware that BMW did phase out the 20 pin connector on later model cars. Try running a single diagnosis on the dme from the OBD port (engine off but ignition key on i.e. dash warning lamps illuminated).
