Unless it scratched all the way THROUGH the paint down to the primer I don't see how scratching is a sign of thin paint....

And yes, setting a metal object down onto your paint will always, invariably, scratch your paint.

Well, you can't really put anything on it to prevent scratches on it. That was from setting metal on metal. To protect your car's paint you need to use a wax or sealant, but this won't do anything to prevent damage, except that caused by acid rain, bird bombs, etc.

Obviously, in the process of placing the 6 pack on your car, it got dragged across the paint. That was very disrespectful of your "friend" to do what he did, especially since you told him not to do it. Let me guess, he either drives a POS car or none at all.

If your lucky, you might be able to polish it out. Unfortunately, BMW's paint sucks in durability, and scratches and chips if you even look at it the wrong way. As far as you mentioning that the paint is thin, your most likely correct, since BMW and most likely most other manufacturers out there use "cheap" tinted sealers under the paint to minimize the use of the more expensive color coat in an effort to maximize their profits.

he drove a 525i and traded it in for a new tsx (with a loan) he used to do that shit all the time, but then again, he had a garage. :(

You should be able to find it at your local hardware store or auto parts store.
