is it possible to roll back the odometer on a 2000 bmw 3 series? i looked up a vin # and carfax report said that the odometer reading could be off/rolled back. the owner states it was a dmw error and a couple people ive spoken to said its not possible to rollback this car. is this true? thanks
It's almost impossible, the VIN and milage are stored in three different modules. To replace all three would be very expensive.

Very easy. Put in a different gauge cluster with lower mileage. Done.
The original mileage still may be in the ECU or TMU. Those can be replaced as well, with the units from the gauge cluster donor car. There you go. Actual mileage that isn't actual.
It pays to be cautious in life, especially in the used car market.

Thats not how it works. If you put in a lower mileage cluster. It has it stored in the DME and it will use the highest mileage between the two. So say the mileage on the cluster was 22k and the stores info in the DME was 45k. it will display the larger of the two on the cluster. Youd have to replace all three items to be bale to change it to a lower mileage which is unlikely

And you would have to get all of them recoded so youd have to go to a dealer and they wouldnt allow that to happen as they would see what was up.

so its basically not possible to roll back the mileage on this car? what if u replaced all 3 from the same car with lower mileage?

Have you ever been to the DMV? Is it so hard to believe they screwed up?
How far off are the numbers? If it's 100K miles off it should be easy to tell by the condition of the car.

I see DMV errors all the time through carfax! At the dealership I work at it is fairly common to find errors in the database. Especially if the car was serviced at a shop that reports to carfax. All it takes is one mileage entry error when recording an oil change and you can have carfax problems.
Oh.. and have you ever heard the phrase "good enough for government work.."??
