I will probably be looking into a BMW cycle in the next year or so...I want a bike that will be fast and fun to mod. I dont care about practicality, cause its a motorcycle, I just want it for cruising. I got the e46 in case I need to move some stuff:D.
Price range probably up to $8000.
What kind of models and years should I be looking at? Thanks:buttrock

BMW bikes are awesome. I don't see a lot of guys modding the new ones, as aftermarket parts are much less common than for japanese bikes.
However, you do see guys modding the older ones a lot...especially the cafe racer crowd.
Definitely post pics of whatever you get.
I'm in lust for the new HP2...too much money though, considering I can get more performance from a Japanese bike that costs half as much.

I would probably try to make it like a replica of my car, but in bike form. Like, jet black, and pretty much murdered out.

Apparently "murdered out" is a new and cooler way of saying "blacked out".
I don't get it either. Seems racist.:shifty:shifty

NO, when you die, you are killed by a black man. DUH!. murdered.
Please ignore my tasteless little racist joke. it was just a joke.:)
At $8k you're looking for a used BMW. What do you want to do with it? Touring, sport riding, track days?
BMW has a huge selection of bikes. They are all very moddable, BMW dealerships even sell aftermarket parts very often.
Quck cheat sheet:
K__X = 4 cylinder inline, could be transverse or longitudinal
R__X = boxer twin, the classic BMW bike
F__X = Single or parallel twin, the newest additions to the lineup. Both have great Rotax motors.

HAHA, I was planning on doing the exact same thing before I had even clicked on the thread. And I don't know jack either . . .
Congrats to the OP though for being knowledgable and keeping it in the family!

Basically, I want a bike to go cruising with...but I want it to be a little sporty looking, and I dont want it to have the police motorcycle look

First off, how much riding experience do you have? Given you are 16/17 (cant remember whether you had a b-day recently), I highly doubt you have enough experience to handle the K series bikes and most of the R series. Given your age, I would look into a F650 cs/gs. Fast enough to have fun on, yet manageable for the inexperienced rider.
Also, dont discount the older bikes. I have been looking for a late '70s R100 for quite a while to restore. However, havent found one that is within a reasonable distance and is mostly complete.
I might be picking up a K1200s this weekend.

I'm not going to sermonize, but tell you what my personal experience when I was 16. Fortunately, my parents were smart enough to only let me have a 1980 Suzuki GS550 when I was living at home. I probably dropped that thing 5 times in two years (no serious crashes though). If I were in your shoes, I would start with an older, smaller bike because you will drop it. The last thing you want to do is spend a bunch of money on a bike and then have to repair it because of some stupid drop at a stop sign. If I would have had a more powerful bike when I was your age, I would not be typing this today. In fact, I didnt get a supersport until I was 26, and even now, the CBR is reserved mainly for the track (in about two weeks, it wont even be street legal and will be ridden exclusively on a track). Also, spend some of that $8k on gear. Ask Razahyde why gear is important.

I might be picking up a K1200s this weekend.i used to have a 78r100s,man i wish i had that bike back.but in the mean time i have a 2000 r1100rt-p.yes it has the police look.but a little black paint and you can coverup the white stripes.plus you can buy them for a couple grand less then the regular r1100rt's and they have alot of special police only equipment.but beings your a kid that probably wouldn't be caught dead on a bike with saddlebags.i'd have to agree on the f650's.

Are they really that great? You can pick up some nice ducati's for cheaper. If you looking for a fast bike that you can mod, I would check bmw off my list, but thats just me. I always had a thing for the late 90's gixxers. Far under your price range too
