Most stock non-staggered wheels are 20mm offset.

That is too high for your car and any BMW 5/6/7/8/Z8 models...they all have an offset range between 11mm-28mm (with the latest 5/6/7 having a few staggered rear wheels with offset as high as 32mm)
The BMW 3/Z3/Z4/X3/X5 have a wheel offset range between 35mm-48mm...so that 40mm wheel offset wheel you're looking at would work fine with any those models...but not yours...unless you purchase wheel spacers, too.

proper offset range depends on the width of the wheels.
You could run 8.5", 9" wheels all around and have around +15mm-20mm offset
