View Full Version : Need to replace shocks/stuts, what to buy?

I bought a used 99 528i a few years ago with about 80K miles on it. It now has 128K and I can tell the shocks/struts are shot, might not have even been replaced for all I know. The car has the sport package. What are the best options out there? I wouldn't be against lowering it a bit, but I'm also on a tight budget. I'm pretty happy with the height of the stock sport package but I would assume buying OEM would probably be more expensive than going after market. Can anyone with some experience in this help out? Thanks much!

Andrew

I just put new struts in my 528i. I have the regular suspension and went with the Bilstein HDs. What a difference! The car has a much firmer feel to it and handles much better. No more feeling like I'm going to roll over in a sharp corner.

I picked mine up from KOPerformance for the best price I could find. They have them for $159/strut and $83/shock for the sport version. Shipping was free.

Good luck with your selection.

Thanks, so those will keep me at the same ride height I have now with the sport package, correct? I don't want to go up. Do I also need to replace my springs? Sorry, I'm dumb at the suspension stuff.

Here's a link on that topic.

I don't have the sport suspension, but I didn't have a difference and I took measurements to make certain. There are some other threads that cover this. You may want to try the search feature as I'm sure you'll find a lot on the topic.
