01 525i...
recently the speedometer has stopped working properly..its a lot slower than it should be, as well as the mpg gauge..it basically shoots straight to 8 mpg instead of moving along with how much the pedal is being pushed, and rpm is a little out of whack as well.. gas consumption has increased as well..in 3 commuting days to work it would normally burn 1/4 tank..but now its burning 1/2 the tank in the same 3 days..
also brakes are making metalic noises when braking but the pads still have some life to them and the sensors have not tripped saying to change the pads..
any ideas on whats going on? car only has 54k on the clock and has never been used in winter until this year..

i basically have the same problem... i tap the gas and let go and the MPG guage keeps going all the way to 8... it seems like it lags and i get like 13.5mpg.... i know my MAF sensor is broken along with fuel filter needing to be changed.... but im stumpped on what else can be wrong... maybe it has something to do with vanos seals failing because mine are probably gone as well..

how many miles on yours?
im very surprised that its happening at 54k.. only things i could think of were the MAF and maybe the speed sensor..i dont see why the cluster itself would sudden stop working

Could be your ABS module, or speed sensor.
Have the codes read.

Would a vaccum leak cause this?

well the maf sensor being broken is probably the biggest reason for your low mpg...im not sure about the speedo...and you would know if you needed new pads...you would hear an intese grinding noise coming from the wheels...very different from sqeaky brakes...

no codes are being thrown... which is making it even more strange
i called turner motorsports and they were stumped also..

i have a 100k on my car so im not suprised... but my MPG was down for the longest time and i suspected the MAF was going bad but no codes were being thrown either untill recently...

With the mpg is really a vac gauge-and with it going over to 0 so fast-I would presume you have a vacuum leak--raise the hood and see if you can pinpoint where there's air hissing--thats the sound of a vac leak--the little boot that connect the throttle body and the idle control valve will develop holes--had it happen to me not long ago in my 03 model 525 wagon.
