For free you can have my Michelin 235/45's. They have lots of thread, maybe 70-80%. The thing is they are old, dated 13th week of '01, but they are NOT dry. They were in storage for years in a temperature controlled room. I recently purchased the wheels these tires are mounted on a ran them for about 80 miles. I can't use these tires on my car, these wheels were originally for E34, E31 and have a lower offset so I have to use lower profile tires to prevent rubbing. I know the story of these wheels and tires because the retired L.I. NY police officer who sold them to me seemed very honest and sincere as he took me on a tour of his whole house including the storage room where the wheels were kept.
When I return home from a business trip I intend to buy new tires. If you want see them and judge for yourself, I think you will find they are safe enough and at least would buy you some time to save for a good set of new tires.
Otherwise, I would choose the Continental tires you posted from Tire Rack

wow thank you SO much for the offer. i actually just ordered the new ones. if you lived closer i would take them off your hands just to keep them in my garage for an emergency.
thanks again!
