So the time has come for the Touring to get it's new shoes. The choices are as follows:
18" E39 M5 gunmetal

18" E60 M5 hyper silver
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff128/spsolomon/e60m5.png
I'm partial to the E60s, but...what say you, BF.C E39?

E39 M5 rims. Just don't curb rash them or have fun refinishing them.

E60 M5. Its the new trend. The other wheel is old school, everyone has them. In another 2 or 3 years they will be ancient.
Be smart look to the future E60. :buttrock

Muahahahahaha! Right! The tech at the place that's doing my water pump and control arms today was ribbing me about how ridiculous the car looks with two sets of wheels on it.

I seriously think I am going to do steels with hubcaps next winter...
I like the Alpina look but I haven't seen a set that's in my price range that isn't marginal quality...

First of all, I think the e60 is a tragedy in terms of styling. There is nothing on it that I would want on my e39. Obviously, this is entirely subjective. So lets be objective and assume that it and its wheels look awesome.
New cutting edge style is great. But slapping it on an 8 year old car with an older classic body style only serves to FURTHER date the vehicle.
Its like an attractive middle-aged woman who tries to stay young-looking by wearing her daughter's clothing. She ain't foolin' nobody . . .
Having said that, I don't care for either of the M5 designs, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the one that best suited the lines/style of the car. The e39 is a classic shape and looks best with "classic" wheels. It also happens to have a great offset which lends itself to wheels with a nice deep dish/lip.
Alpina's, BBS (or BBS-look) basket-weave, Rondells w/ a nice lip, Mpars, etc. all look great on thge car. The e60 wheels will do nothing for it, IMHO, except make it look like an old car w/ new-style wheels.

You would think the E39 is a dinosaur, its not so putting today's wheels on it is far from Andrea Mitchell in teen's clothes.
Think of it as more like a nip and tuck on a 32 yr old than attempting to bring back Liz Taylor. :nono

rocket, i'm diggin the e60's. i say go for 'em. you'll be the only touring rockin the new school wheels. i think the gun metal won't look right with your dark paint.

of the two, I'm leaning towards the E60 M5 rims - stylistically I've never been a fan of the E39 M5 rims (even on an M5), however I think you can do better than either wheel.
19" alpinas would look sick - pain to clean the spokes but would look unique
I bring to the discussion:
19" M-pars

Hamann PG2 reps

If I had a nice profile shot of my car, I'd throw it to you...but it's still at the shop. Maybe tomorrow when I get it back.
Speaking of the shop...my loaner is an e36 318 auto. I've never missed my 5er more in my life. I'm shocked they can even put a roundel on this car. :confused
One of the reasons I like the E60 wheels IS the uniqueness factor. I'm going to look at the Alpina option a little closer, but I definitely don't want to go with 19s...I think the roads around here would eat them alive over the long term.

+1 MAD DOG is wise:) I could think of a few different wheels that you could put on that wagon for the same kind of money that will look much better. Ultimately you have to be happy! If i had listened to everyone i would have never purchased gold wheels.....but so far everyone likes them!

I love the E39 M5's, so I voted for them. But I'd love to see what an E39 looks like with the E60 M5 wheels, touring or sedan.

I hear the points being made re: making sure that the wheels match the car. They are good points. Personally, I think that the E60 wheels might actually look better on an E39. They don't look that great on the E60, IMHO. The E60 5-spoke design ported over pretty well to BKPhoto's car, I think, so...
I was firmly entrenched in the lip camp until Gumbi told me it was OK to not love lips. Speaking of Gumbi, I'm not making any decisions until the master weighs in. When he gets back from Bimmerclinic!

on an E39. I have OEM M5 wheels but have always admired the BBS LMs, HRE and AC Schnitzer wheels on the E39. I saw an E39 recently with M6 wheels on it and it looked like it should have been driven by a circus clown. Just my opinion. As always, you should do what suits your taste and makes you happy - it's your car, your money!! No offense btw.

I automatically said to myself, "stick with deep dish 18" e39 wheels".
That is until I saw pincho's ride. Nice rims, I like the e60 m5's on a e39 now.

You have a 528i. Stick with a light-weight wheel from BBS. Heavy replicas will hurt the performance of the car.

Go for the e60 wheels. They WILL be different and price wise, they seem to be the same as well. Worst case scenario, you grow tired of them and sell them. They will indeed sell quick. Nothing to worry about on that front. Any direction you go, you will not be stuck with a wheel no one wants.

yepp they are replicas.. i like so many wheel types that its prolly better i get replicas so when i think its time to change.. then you don't feel you have spent sooo much on something (if you guys think its bad for BMW costs in the US, just try Australian BMW prices :( and thats for everything), plus its not as bad when you gutter rash them lol
either way go for something you like, whether it looks 'classic' or 'too modern' if you like them then stick with it.. an e39 will look hot regardless

I have an E39 M5 and am considering going to the E60 sport wheels. I think with a lowered car they will look great and I plan on refinishing mine in a matte black. I definitely dont think the stock (E39 M5) rims look bad, and I definitely dont think they are way too common - I just think the E60 wheels look great (I prefer concave rims as opposed to rims with lips) and will be aggressive with a different finish.
E60 wheels, hands down. I think if you look for E60 sport wheels as opposed to E60 M5 wheels you may find some for a bit cheaper. They are really the same wheel.
