(1) Alcon aerospace alloy aluminum 4-piston calipers, staggered piston sizes. Color choices: red or matte gray.
(2) BMW Motorsport floating rotors or 1-piece rotors, 325mm x 28mm.
(3) Hawk Performance Ceramic brake pads (street use). Race pad substitution available.
(4) Mil-spec heat treated stainless steel alloy radial mount brackets.
(5) DOT-compliant stainless steel braided/plastic covered brake lines. Matching rear lines included.
(6) Mounting hardware, all metric grade 12.9.

The design of these kits allows for scalable rotor use. Primarily, UUC specs the kits to use genuine BMW Motorsport rotors as provided with the European version of the M3 or the M3 CSL which feature a true radial floating mechanism for free thermal expansion of the disk unhindered by the center hat. The system is scalable in that oversized and thicker rotors will be available for future use.

Working directly with Alcon, all calipers used by UUC for the BMW fitments are custom-built "bespoke" components, specifically designed to retain perfect brake bias and a firm pedal.

Alcon is a name synonymous with the manufacture and supply of high specification brakes and clutches for motorsport and high performance road vehicles.

In the world of motorsport, Alcon a Technical Partner to the Honda F1 Racing Team, supplying brake calipers of a patented design; while co-operating with a number of other teams to develop the next generation of F1 braking systems. Alcon also provided all the brake hardware to support Citroën’s dominance of the World Rally Championship [WRC] in recent years. In the US, the 2003, 2004, and 2005 IRL titles have all been won using Alcon brakes, and Alcon product is specified as mandatory for the hard-braking road course races. In the world of NASCAR, Alcon counts Penske, Hendrick Motorsport and Ray Evernham Motorsport amongst their front-running customers; while a new partnership with friction manufacturer, Raybestos in 2006, is making the use of Alcon designed and manufactured brake components still more widespread in the top stock car series.

In addition the motorsport departments within Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda (Dome), Peugeot, Renault and Volkswagen count amongst their many customers.

In the field of specialist and performance road cars Alcon serves an impressive list of prestigious road car manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Brabus, Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche and Prodrive. In this field too, their reputation for technology and innovation is highly visible, no more so than the calipers for the 2006 Bentley Continental GT Diamond Series, vast but lightweight 8-piston calipers designed specifically to clamp the world’s largest road car brake discs, ceramic items of 420mm diameter. Ultra-high performance resides in the level of quality... quality in engineering, materials and kit fitment. Alcon designs and manufactures every caliper in-house and the resulting component is superior to virtually any similar offering. Alcon calipers are incredibly stiff due to their cast-in reinforcement buttresses.

Their progressive design philosophy continues with the pistons and seals. The ultra-resilient internal pressure seals minimize piston retraction so that pedal travel is short, consistent and they are resistant to knock-back.

Rob,

I've got a question after reading about brake bias and the alcon kits. From the brake bias page:

"UUC analyzes all of these factors during the development of our performance brake packages. Our brake kits are all vehicle-specific, and will even vary between two models that would otherwise seem to be identical. For example, all of our front-only kits are specifically tailored to provide ideal brake bias with the original rears - this means that the "ideal" kit for a 330i is very different than for a 323i due to different original-equipment rear brakes and their specific hydraulic systems."

Then I go to the application guide and the same kit is listed for the 330/328/325/323 and now I'm confused. Any clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks

Very good question!

At this time (but soon to be updated), the website does not reflect all of the offerings. Very soon, we are going to release a larger 330-only front kit which will not be suitable for 328/325/323.

As far as the 4-piston fitments go, the same kit can be used on all 330/328/325/323. Bias is set up for the 330 at an idealized front/rear ratio, but the "worst case" 323 setup is barely 4% different. What the difference is, however, and why BMW puts larger brakes on the higher-performance models, is the thermal capacity. So while brake torque is not significantly different, how much heat can be absorbed is different.

Of course, in actual track and race use, there is often "pad tuning" that takes place by the driver or team to change the bias, to optimize how the chassis feels... and how one car is set up is different than another. Standard baseline bias may be tweaked to work differently. We discuss this on the same "BRAKE BIAS" page:

For advanced users, brake bias can be easily adjusted to compensate for unique suspension setups, tire size changes, specific track requirements, or driver preference using "brake pad tuning".

By selecting different pads front and rear, bias can be shifted forward or rearward as desired. Some manufacturers publish the coefficient of friction for each of their compounds (expressed as "Cf" or the Greek letter "m" (Mu), as in "0.64m". Cf is directly related to brake pad effectiveness, i.e. brake torque generated. A "milder" (lower m) pad would be used on the axle where less brake torque is desired.

Powdercoating expense. The red calipers simply cost more than the gray calipers, which are not powdercoated.
