I have an erratic acting heater fan on a 1993 e34 525i. Sometimes it works fine, and other times it doesn't work at all. The problem doesn't appear to be related to the speed setting on the fan switch. It seems to either work or not work at its own will. Sometimes it starts working or stops working while driving. Other times it may be working when I park, but doesn't work when I restart at a later time, and visa versa.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Mine was doing all kinds of weird shit for a while, eventually it got noisy, so I just replaced it.... not that expensive, and it works like new now.

I beleive that I found my problem. I took the blower motor out of the car, and the brushes look shot.

Here's a writeup on replacing just the brushes. I went and bought mine, US$8.24 for 3 pair. I will try and buy more so if anyone's interested lmk. But if it's not the brushes, it's the bearing. Anyone know where to get those?
Also, this person's problem sounds like its the resistor pack. For early version uses expensive sword pack, but I've seen writeups on fixing w/ transistors or simply resoldering. For the std, it's 33 bucks at autozone. However, looking at schematic you should be able to jump from grn/grn to any contact on the rest of resistor connector to test motor? Just a test, don't do it permanent. Except at your own risk. This also applies to e36 cause I've replaced brushes there also. I'll let you know how this works.
