Is the 91 octane here in california too crappy for an s14 with higher compression to deal with?

Yes. Jim C chips will ping on a stock 2.3L with some brands of crappy gas. There are several guys on the E30 M3 SIG email list that have modded 2.5L engines in California. I don't know how they deal with 11.25:1 and 91 octane.
