I realy appreciate anyone advise on this engine swap! both cars are 535i

1. I have a 5 spped, 1989, 535i with 150 k miles which due to over heat, head gasket blown.
2. I bought a automatic, 1991, 535i with 207K miles on it which has a realy good engine, but a bad transmission.

I want to take the engine off of #2 car and put in on #1 car, and while doing so, I want to replace the clutch.

The engine swap will be done by a mechanic I know for a $1000, the cluth and bearing would be around $200. I have another extra 3K that I want to spend puting some more hourse in the car.
please somone help me to see, if this swap is possible, or what are my other options?
what can I do to boost the power with extra money?

thanks for all the help.

for that money, you are better off fixing the HG. I did mine for ~$500 including cost of head disassembly and milling, full gasket set, new plugs, and new head bolts.

If you want more power, 3k will almost get you a TCD S1 turbo kit if i remember correctly. If not, its a huge start on a home brew kit.

Get the head rebuilt - have the shop pick the best of the two - this will be about $300 and you would be nuts (IMHO) to spend that kind of $$ without having the head redone. Then get a turbo setup on your new head - I would also check the bottom ends and probably would go with the lower miles block - the bottom ends are VERY stong and a visual inspection will probably tell you if one had been well maintianed.

If always wanted to use a 733i block and a 745i head and turbo manifold (or a whole 745i engine) the 733i block would give you the correct lower compression ratio for a 745i turbo setup - read about the crazy hp people get out the the 745i setups.

+1. Basically you can spend @ $450 for a Miller MAF which will get you close to 20 HP if you are lucky.

After that it's various degrees of turbo or if you are adventurous supercharging. Unless you are a serious bargain hunter and competant mechanic, $3000 just gets you in the game on the FI front.

The M30 ain't no detuned small block V8 that you can slap a set of used headers, holley double pumper, cam and edelbrock intake on to double your HP. It's already an optimally tuned engine.:stickoutt
