I've removed mine about 3 months ago, and seems like the temperature didn't change much, if any. On the butt dyno, it feels every so slightly smoother as I accelerate.
I was stuck in an hour of cold traffic (35degrees F) and again, never overheated at all. Coolant levels have been fine, only worry I have is traffic during the summer.

I would be extremely careful about doing this... Seems a week point in BMW's is their propensity to overheat, so IMHO, removing crucial cooling system parts is counterintuitive. The only time the clutch is really going to sap HP, is when it's fully engaged, and the only time it's fully engaged is during cold startups and extremely hot situations, neither of which are times when those maybe 5 extra hp are going to matter. I would guess much bigger and safer gains can be made elsewhere...
That's my .02

My drive consists of 2 miles between home and work. So the fan is always locked cause the car is cold, and it takes forever to heat up. I would say it suits my situation, but I can't say that it would work for everyone.
There is the auxiliary fan in case the does get above a certain temp; without it I wouldn't be at ease.

By The Time The Aux Fan Comes On, You Should Be Turning Your Car Off. At Least That Is The Way It Is In My E30 And All Other Cars I Have Owned........

actually it goes the other way. In cold weather your fan should be free-spinning, and in heat it should be locked up to provide the most amount of power going to the fan.
I plan on removing my engine driven fan and replacing it with an electric one, but I wouldn't recommend removing it and not replacing it with anything, especially in the summer.

I replaced mine with an electric fan. During the winter the cooling system is good enough to handle things without the fan on, that said if your system is operating properly to begin with.
My reccomendation is that you want to put in an electric fan very soon, use a temp switch just like the aux. fan but set much lower. This way the fan will work whrn it needs to and not when the car is trying warm up on very cold mornings.
Having the fan clutch and fan out of the way in the engine comartment is a major plus also. Remember there is some fabricating that needs to take place for it to work right though, some people have had them rub on the water pump pulley and that is not good.
All in all, get an electric one of you feel you need the ponies.
