That time of year for me to renew my Auto Registrations or License Plates.

Just wondering what everyone else has to pay and how often?

In Michigan, I pay the following every year:

1982 BMW 320i = $47.00
2002 VW Jetta = $72.00
1993 Infiniti J30 = $134.00
1994 BMW 530i = $174.00
....plus $18.00 for my drivers' license.

$445.00 just for the privilege of driving. :(

Feels like such a rip off. I believe the fees are based on the original value of the vehicle...but how many years does that need to go? You would think it would start getting less as the car gets older. When a vehicle turns 26 years old you can buy a "historical" plate for $15 and it lasts for 10 years, IIRC, but then you are limited to driving no more than a few thousand miles every year.

I dunno, 50-60 bucks a year for our cars.
We pay sales tax now on all vehicle sales, including private ones, & based on book value, so they always find a way to get their money.
Emissions testing/inspection annually... two speed sniffer test, no dyno.
I think that is like $32 normally. I pay $60 and always pass. :)

DL is 25?ish? I don't remember, even though I just renewed it in july, and it is good for 7 years.

We don't do emissions testing at all in Michigan. Which is good for the older cars :stickoutt

As for inspection, basically, if you can start it up after you stop for them to look and your headlights and brakelights work, you pass. I'm not to that point, but it's good to know I've got a long way to drop. :D

Here in AZ they charge you based on the vehicle cost so
2000 Excursion $221 (when I got it $507)
95 540i $99
DL is good for 25 years

In NSW I have to pay about $350 because of the weight of the vehicle, plus Stamp Duty (which is $3 in every $100 that I paid for it) which for me works out at $255.

I also have to pay $160 a year for my custom White Euro Plates.

So all up about $865 a year.

And if I need a yearly greenslip renewal (Compulsory Third party Insurance) that's another $486. :(:(:(:(:(

Feels like such a rip off
We get hammered in Aus as far as rego is concerned.

Man here in Georgia the BMW is cheapppp. I pay $35 a year. My wife has a 2003 Mercedes e320 (junk by the way). She pays $416. I also have a 2005 Lincoln Navigator (i need it to tow my boat) and that pays $447 per year. The 1995 525 is a steal. I love that car better than all the rest. Ohh I forgot to mention the Bmw pays $25 a month on insurance.

Hawaii is by weight; around $140ish for an E34 I believe.

+ $20 for the "Safety Check" scam that does jack-all to keep unsafe vehicles off the road. :mad

No emissions, and if you know where :shifty to go, you can get a safety check sticker quicker than going through McD's drive through at lunch on Saturday.

You definitely have it MUCH WORSE than we do in the states.

What does gas cost in Australia?

I've hear in Europe it is around $8 or $9 US dollars worth.

Mine Was 40 Something.

You Are Not Paying 400+ For Just The Priviledge Of Driving. You Are Paying 400+ To Have 4 Registered Vehicles On The Road. That Is Considered Luxury.

Paying 40 Something Is Just For The Priviledge Of Driving.

It's funny, my '87 325 was about $115 per year to resgister, and now my '01 325Xi runs about $135. But yea, here in Mi, they go by the original value of the vehicle. How retarded is that?? So you get to drive (in my case with the E30) a 15 year old vehicle that cost me $500 to own, being registered as if it's the same as some new $30,000 vehicle (that's what the E30 went for, it was a premium package - go figure). Completely random and unfair. They should go by the current 'blue book' value of the car or something... but of course then they'd just charge a higher percentage of that lower number and we'd still have to pay the same so... how many millions of cars out there and they're getting hundreds of dollars per car.... how many billions of dollars are we throwing down the rabbit hole...?

End of rant.

1 litre here hovers around maybe $1.50 - $1.60, that's for regular 91 RON
