This means that it's time to replace your brake pads, NOW. That error goes off when you have about 8% of the pad left, so don't wait around too long.

My best guess is that your brake pads probably have a wear sensor built (or snapped) into the top of them. When the pads wear down, the sensor gets cut into by the rotor and it sets off the light on the dash. The brake pads are semi-metallic and over time they wear down the contact area of the rotor, leaving a protruding lip on the outer edge of the rotor, and it cuts through the sensor. If the pads themselves are O.K. you might just have a broken sensor wire somewhere.
Good luck.

I think the sensor is actually in between the two "lobes" of the pad, but otherwise you're pretty much correct. Does this get reset automatically when you put in a new sensor?

I could be wrong but I think you are supposed to change the Brake pad sensors at least at every other brake service.

Replace them with every brake service. If the warning has gone off, then they're toast.

Okay...help us understand...if your warning is on and your pads are perfect...can you give more details to your situation?

Did you recently replace your pads? If so, did you also replace your brake sensors? If not, and it had gone off...then the brake sensor should have been replaced because it lost continuity when it wore thru to originally initiate the warning.

Are you doing a "visual" inspection of the brake pads? If so, sometimes there is a built-in lip on on the edge of the pad that gives the appearance that there is a lot of media left on the pad...when in essence...there is very little media left.

There is one brake sensor on each axle...the front driver's wheel and the rear passenger wheel.

Yup! gotta love 'em... BTW the warning should go away after changing the sensors, since the circuit isn't broken anymore

Yep...when the pads wear the sensor gets closer to the rotor, and the rotor eventually wears through the sensor breaking the circuit and telling the computer it's time to upgrade :)

They're cheap sensors- You hear the word "sensor" and you think aw crap there goes a hundred bucks, but it's just a damn wire. Call up www.bmaparts.com and have them send you a few. There's on at the front left wheel and the right rear I think. The first time I changed one I didn't get the wire routing right and the wire rubbed on the wheel until it wore through. Oops.

Not a big deal-

Oh and for brakes I trust the guys at www.cobaltfriction.com , they know their stuff and their pricing isn't bad. Even if it is a little more, the Axxis Ultimates are worth every nickel. Don't be cheap with brakes!

Good luck!

ooop!! now u've gone and done it

had u replaced your breakpads on time u wouldnt have to replace your rotors as well..

that grinding sound means u either have to resurface the rotors or get new ones...

If you're getting a grinding sound it's very likely too late for your rotors. It's also time to stop driving the car until you can get this fixed, your braking capacity has diminished to the point where a panic stop will lead to more panicking and less stopping.

Stupid sensors are a waste of time. Just cut the two wires, twist them together and unhook the battery momentarily. Done. Fixed. Free.

If you buy a set of rear pads from Pep Girls the sensor is included. For the front pads you need to buy the sensor separately. Pep Girls had pads on sale the day after Thanks giving for just $9.99 an axle, for any cars.

Thanks. GFY2.

AGAIN>>>Go buy new pads and new rotors.
DO NOT GO TO AUTOZONE FOR PADS.

rotors are so cheap... no reason to try and resurface them to save $20 at best.
