So My 94 530i is overheating, The fan blades on the fan clutch broke off destroying my fan shroud and blades, I replaced the fan blades and removed the shroud. Turned the car on and it overheated again, then i noticed the radiator was leaking from a small spot were the fan must have hit it. So i replaced the radiator, and bam the car is still overheating. The upper hose on the Rad. is getting hot so i figure the thermostat is good. The water pump isn't leaking, I can stop the fan with my hand while its spinning. So could it be my fan clutch, and would that even cause overheating. The car runs a bit over the 1/2 mark on the temp gauge while driving, then when i stop and it idles for a little while it heats up, also when i turn the AC on the electric AUX fan is kicking on, shouldn't it be on anytime the AC button is pressed? PLEASE HELP!!!

The fan clutch could certainly be bad, but you need to install a new shroud. The engine driven fan is much more effective at idle with the shroud in place. The aux fan should run as long as the compressor is running, if the compressor cycles off the fan will cycle off. gl

And a warning to all, don't stand over your car with the fan running. Nasty things can happen if blades come off.

You probably have air in the cooling system. Did you drain everything and put in fresh coolant? The fan clutch may also be bad.

bleed-bleed-bleed. That seems like the culprit.

+1 on the fan shroud, you need it, it will make a big difference.

also, if you can stop the fan that easily, it sounds like the fan clutch is bad, which means you're probably not pulling enough air at idle.

I just went outside and stopped it with my hand. Its funny the car will idle for 10 min at opp temp. and then it will start to heat up.

The upper hose on the Rad. is getting hot so i figure the thermostat is good.

If the thermostat is good, when it opens, the lower radiator hose will go lukewarm. The upper rad hose will always be hot at running temps, regardless of the tstat.

also when i turn the AC on the electric AUX fan is kicking on, shouldn't it be on anytime the AC button is pressed?

? confused by this....not sure what the question is...

The shroud helps efficiency, but it isn't necessary.

I agree that it sounds like the fan clutch is bad, but a good one should engage on a dead cold start, then start freewheeling until the engine gets up to temperature, then activate as necessary.

changed the fan cltuch (thank god i had a C clamp to hold the pulley) and put in a new fan shroud, car seems to be good now let it idle for 15 no overheating so im guessing im in the clear.
