hello fellow bmers
so im thinking about driving my 95 e34 with 130,000 miles up to newyork.
which is about a 500 mile drive both ways. just wanted to know some things i should make sure of doing before leaving so that the car wont malfunction on the drive.
also the middle console on the backseat has a black surface. is that possible to remove i need to fit my snowboard through the trunk.
check your fluids
you can punch out the metal plate in between the seats.. it is only tack welded. Be sure to protect your board from the edges.. they can be sharp.

what fluids ?
would i punch out towards the rear of the car (facing the trunk) or front?
i also have a problem with my steering wheel.
a couple of months ago i was getting a clunk noise
we tightened up the steering box to see if it was the problem.
all it did was make it harder for me to control the car. feels like theres no power steering anymore. what could be the problem and solution?

An oil and coolant change wouldn't hurt. I need to do both to mine soon.
Is it really necessary to disco the - battery terminal when changing coolant or is just a precaution so the car isn't started accidentally? I hate having to reset all my HU settings.

Sounds like you tightened the box too much. Did the clunking go away? Front suspension and other steering components should be checked.

About your ski-pass, If you fold down your armrest and un-velcro the leather flap you'll see perforated sound deadening foam you can rip out to expose the metal to punch out.

There you can see the foam and the metal. And the stock carpet in your trunk has to either be removed or modded if you want access to the hole since, along with the metal, it blocks access to the cabin. I just fabed up a new one using plywood and carpeting from kragen. I just drilled holes where those little screw tabs hold up the carpet. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a14/Maxsteel991/CIMG2827.jpg

change oil, check tire pressure, coolant level, coolant hoses for leaks, bring extra quarts of oil and coolant, check spare tire pressure, bring and extra lowbeam bulb just in case, and make sure you always have gas. =) i took my 1990 E34 to vegas and back last year. no problem at all.
don't forget to check the headlight fluid.

Is there any chance of power steering malfunction if the steering box Is tightened.
Thanks to everyones response. U all have cleancars just wish mine was manual and lighter haha. Any more suggestions to the long drive would be appreciated.
I was planning on selling the car to a more gas effiecent car. But idk looking at all ur cars dropped with nice rims and sound systems making me think twice haha.
My e34 is pretty much stock with clear corners. Makes it look more modern. I hear stock shocks and springs wear out at 60k. Maybe I should get a nice bilstein setup drop it a little. Idk. Hahaha any suggestions on what to change or replace would be nice.

I have a power steering leak (slow) and when it gets low, it's really hard to steer and I hear a hum. Could be your problem. Shocks don't drop the vehicle, springs do. But getting matching size shocks according to spring height is recommended, although not crucial. Go for H&R Sports or Eibach Pro-Kit. Clear signals make your car look newer, but if you want a sporty look, go for smoked signals (all four). Wheels do wonders for appearance as well, many cheap options out there. Start with springs and lights, step back, and welcome to the addiction.;)

I took a road trip last year and I was fine. Make sure your COOLANT level is good. Also, power steering fluid. If not, top off with Shell ATF. Make sure your radiator mount brackets are secure! (or else bring an extra fan!). PM me for location of all these things if needed. Check alignment, all five tires' pressure, and that should do it! Watch the cops.

if your turn signals are not blinking fast enough, you can also top 'em up with this stuff (http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=6).
And keep a tub of elbow grease (http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=32) in the trunk.
When you get to NY, you'll want to make sure your tires don't lose pressure due to the cold by adding some winter air (http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=45) to them.
+1 on watch the cops. Especially in VA, MD & NJ. As if they didn't have any real bad guys to go after. :confused

point of what? the hole? It's exactly what you're using it for. It's a ski hole option. There is a bag that you might find that goes there. It keeps the moisture out of the cabin

check all of your fluids; change them if they are going to be due soon, or while you are on the trip.
how new is your battery?
check tire pressure. speaking of tires, if you are traveling in snow country, do you have snow tires?
assuming you are traveling during this time of year, probably wouldn't hurt to have some extra washer fluid with you - preferably the ice melt version.
snow/ice scraper for your windows
as to tank capacity; the BMW specs claim 81 liters, with an 8 liter reserve. that translates, according to google calculator, into 21 gallons and some change.
i haven't taken our e34 on a highway winter trip, so i don't know how much the different weather would affect these numbers; but, in the summer we easily average 26mpg on the highway so 26*21 = 546...That's probably optimistic, I think we usually filled up around the 500 mile mark...
the e34 is a superb highway car; did i mention snow tires for snow country trips???

Do you have the OBC in your car (see pic below)? If yes, push the RANGE button and it will give you an approximation of how many miles you can go at your current AVG MPH, AVG MPG, & amount of fuel in the tank. If your AVG MPH/ AVG MPG drops or rises...so will the RANGE approximation.

Below is the wheel & tire spec chart from the owners manual...look at the tire sizes with M+S (mud + snow).
