I love the look of my M3, but when I see them on the road lately they look really old, what are your thoughts

I love my E36 M3...but the body style is pretty dated.
"not as BAD as a 2002"
WTF does that mean? :spank

There are tons of the 02 guys that think that car is the schiznet. I drove in one a few years ago. I would rather have a 67 mustang.

a washed, well cared for, garaged car looks excellent on the road I think.
It's just that most aren't of that description. Mine is.

timeless lines IMO
but i also love the e46 m3 lines..they are the only M cars i actually want to own.. e34 and e39 m5 i like as well, but 5 series is too big for my tastes

Love the car, but it is definately starting to show its age. . .

It is a 1992 design. It should look dated in 2008.

i think the e36 m3 has a great look to it... i wouldn't trade it for an e46 m3 anyday.

Folks at work still think I am being paid too much every time they see the M. This tells me the design still hold its mystique. Then again everyone thinks IT guys make too much. Ahh, if only it were true.

Any M car is still a nice sight to look at as long as it's clean and done in good taste. No major complaints here, I'm just glad I can afford to buy/maintain one now as opposed to ten years ago or so when they were new and selling for 40k+ at the dealership. Somewhat timeless lines, getting that classic look now, always fun to drive, and still highly sought after...

If it's clean, in excellent condition, and stock? (or at most, with a proper aftermarket wheel, ie Fikse or BBS), an E36 //M looks fine in todays market. Looks MUCH better than CTS or Accord or any number of cars actually. I saw a 1985 325is over the weekend. Red, tan interior, appeared to have 16inch BBS wheels. In PERFECT condition inside and out. Turned a LOT of heads as it sat in front of the restaurant.

I'd say the standard 3 series, definitely, the M's...not so much, if they have a spoiler, to me it helps a lot, and if they're nicely lowered they look even better. It just depends, but for the M's don't as bad, but then again even a 99 E46 328 looks old to me.

Ive noticed that people who drive E36s and arent enthusiasts, let them go to shit.
Makes them look really old. But a cleanly modded E36 to me looks better than a lot of newer cars.

My car is almost 11 years old, but has been garaged the entire time. It looks really good and still puts a smile on my face.
I have had a few people over the past 2-3 weeks comment on the car. When I told them it was a 97, they could not believe it.
I agree that there are a lot of E36s out there that are really showing their age. Bad paint, falling apart window trim, faded black trim, bad wheels, etc. A clean E36 that has had some money put into it is still a great car and will turn heads.
That said, my dinan stage III shocks/struts needed replacing, so I am doing a little upgrading.....just waiting on my GC coilovers now!!!
I plan on keeping the car for several more years.

its definitely dated. but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. hence we see beauty and other people see a ten year old car. but that said i of course see the beauty in it.

My car will be 12 this year - I don't really care. I still get compliments on it from friends and strangers, and it is still the all-around best performing car you can buy for $10-15k.

I don't think it's dated. I keep my M3 clean and it still amaze me when i look at my M3 each time i finished washing the car.

Everyone I meet that doesn't know any better always thinks the car is much newer than it really is. I am often asked how I can afford a BMW on an Army income. When I tell them my car is 10 years old they are stunned.:cool
Most think that it is only a few years old.

i think it looks good but i also think it looks old. mostly cause its so boxy. well that and it IS old. (relatively speaking of course.) BUT lots of other non car people dont seem to understand that its old much to my confusion.

A well maintained E36 M3 looks damn good.
It has great lines and body proportions.
Does it look brand new?
Of course not.
Does it look damn good?
You betcha.
Does not looking 'dated' mean a car looks good?
Hell no.

The legendary "M" variant. Decorated. A modern classic. The "M" poster boy.

I think the E36 M looks more aggressive than an E46 M due to the edgier front air dam and lip, harder lines, and the rear diffuser. I find the E46 too rounded and does not stand out from a regular 3 as much as a E36M stands out from a regular E36. I would never turn a E46 M down if someone gave me one, but I would rather have an E36 with the Euro engine, without a rear spoiler, please.

I feel the lines resemble almost a europian muscle car, with the fastback and longer hood.
Older yes
But I feel its a classic design that for enthusiasts will hold interest for a long time.

put it this way. there arent many new cars i can actually afford that id get rid of mine for. what does $12k buy you these days? a chevy cobalt? toyota corolla? thanks but ill keep my old M3. it still looks better than 90% of the cars out there. german cars age very well. look at the american and jap cars from 10 years ago or ones that were designed in 1992 for that matter. those look totally dated and you can tell they are old. park a 92 325i next to a 92 honda accord or nissan maxima and see what i mean. those cars just follow whats popular at the time in terms of styling. E30s and E34s still look awesome today and those were designed that were introduced over 20 years ago.
