View Full Version : Did I glaze my brakes......?

I just picked up a 97 M3 about six weeks ago and about three weeks ago I installed new pads and rotors and goodridge lines to pass inspection (pads and rotors were what failed inspection, I installed lines just because). They now have about 800 miles on em. I'm not sure of the previous brand of brakes. I installed Hawk HPS pads and brembo blanks. After changing everything out I bled the brakes then went on to the bedding process. I braked probably 5 times from 40 to about 5 using moderate pressure without stopping, with about a mile or two between to not over heat things. Then braked from about 85 to about 20mph probably 6 times.

How the brakes felt before the swap:
Great from cold; barely had to touch the pedal and they grabbed and felt very solid and easy to modulate. They did fade after a good amout of very agressive braking, but it was progressive and predicable.

How the brakes feal now:
Have to push the pedal a considerable amout more before they grab and at moderate speed (40-70) the feal soft and faded, even when cool-warm. At slow speed (<30mph) they feal fine, except for the longer pedal travel before the start to grab. They are very inconsistant and hard to modulate. Pedal travel is much farther and the brakes have an on off feal. Sometimes ofter a using them a couple times they seem to heat up and work good and other times after using them a couple times the same way, the feal like they're faded and toasted.

Now here are my questions (sorry for being so lengthly):
I think the bedding process I followed was for pads of race compound. Was it?
Does it sound like I glazed the rotors/pads?
If I did, what can I do to fix the problem?

Thank you in advance for the help, Pat.

Long pedal travel seems to indicate that you have air in the brake lines.

Street pads do not need as aggressive of a break-in as you described, either. Next time do 2 hard stops instead of 6 after warming them up.

so did i ruin the pads or rotors by doing this?

No. Bleed the system, see how it feels, report back.

bleed it

the pedal travel is not crazy long, just longer then before. I'm going to flush and bleed the brakes this week.

+1 for bleeding.

I flushed my brake and bled the system on Saturday and they feal MUCH better. :redspot The next time I have the car on the lift I'll probably bleed em again, just to be sure I got all the air out.
