my rear tyres are rubbing against my arches, im currently running 255/35/18 on 8.5x18 alloys.
they are fitted to a 1998 e36 323i coupe.
Is there anything i can do to avoid thiswithout having to roll the arches

Unfortunately you will have to roll your fenders. However that is a big tire for 18x8.5's on an E36. On my 18x8.5's I ran a 225/40/18 and it still rubbed under cornering. The offset of the wheels is a factor as well.

Yes, there is something you can do but it will only be a temporary fix and you will give up some ride comfort. Go to a local autoparts store and get some spring spacers. They fit in between your center most coils and will prevent your rear springs from collapsing where you have spaced them. You will lose some ride comfort and it will raise your ride height a bit, but it will prevent excessive tire wear until you can get new springs, wheels, or thinner tires. Or you could just roll your fenders.
