2000 E39 528i With GM Transmission 125,000 mi
2 days ago the temp was 24 degree's outside and my 528i shifted EXTREMELY hard on all gears. Never before had it done this in cold weather but I expected it to clear up as she came up to operating temp. It has remained constant since then even though the ambient temp is now up tp 48degree's. I put her up in the air to make sure the Trans oil level was correct, it was and had a nice red-clean look to it.
With the car in neutral, reving to 2000 rpm, there is a very destinct wouring sound comming from the front paft of the trans that never present before. It doesn't make the sound when at idle. I can hear it when driving as well. The sound is similar to what a power steering pump makes when it is low on fluid. Hence why I checked the fluid level. Yes I am aware it is a "Green" transmission, but I have changed the fluid and filter before at 75K.
Now for the questions:
Can this be an electrical problem? hahahahahaha
Could it be the torque converter? (This is my hope)
What about the internal tranmission pump and can it be replaced? (I have built BMW engines, maunal transmissions, even diffs, but never ventured inside a automatic.)
Am I just screwed and wishing that I didn't have to put a new tranny in her?
How could it have possibly gone south this quickly.
Thanks
John
