View Full Version : Will an X-brace decrease door rattling ?

I know this may sound crazy.
But, from my extensive research on your posts I concluded that it adds to body firmness/structure.
In that case some situations where the flexibility of the body could provoke that typical door rattling COULD diminish.
Any real life comment ?
Thanks, Jorge

Its probably your door card.

If anything, it would increase the rattle.

No, it wouldn't. Stiffening up the chassis decreases flexing, which can easily cause creaks. A door panel rattling just means it isn't on their tight enough or some of the pins are missing or broken. To tighten it up, install very thin rubber washers between the panel and the door.

Is your door panel loose? If it is, take them off, and reglue to mounting bracket things. BSW did a youtube video DIY on this. I did it last week, and I am very glad I did. You can find the video here....and there are two more on youtube

You can buy a hot glue gun at a crafts store for $7, or at Lowes for $25

It would probably gelp with creaks and cracks but not rattles. The E36 chassis is like a soft pretzel or so it seems. Its probably stiffer than most though.
Did you check your hinge fluid?

Thanks for all you comments and suggestions.
I see this does not seem to be the way to have a rock solid body...
I my case the cards are Ok, the hinges are ok and lubricated and the sealing rubbers were treated with Gummi Pflege.
As decribed in another thread I am preparing a full change of door clips, adding sound deadeners etc etc.
In this task the YouTube videos will be more than helpful.
I will also try to understand better the noise sources (will use my wife to drive and free me to inspect things)
However, I have, so far, the sensation that at least some noise comes from the doors being compressed in their frames by the body flexions. (not sure)
Thanks again !

Installing the new door seals will help but it is $$$. X-brace will help reduce the body flex but not to the point of silencing your doors.
