I saw some on ebay and they were chromoly(way stronger than aluminum)

not going to trust ebay on probably the single part that makes a car work.

There is some info on using a different BMW flywheel from the M40 engine here:

You can also shave a M20 flywheel down to 18 lbs, although you also have to change the clutch and starter.
