View Full Version : 17 year old girl trying to put in steering fluid!

Ok so this is what I know I drive a 1998 BMW 238i... so I believe but since I am in school I can't go check. My car started making noises when I turn, in my standard jeep that I drove that usually mean the power steering was low. I bought the fluid and went to put it in this morning and can not find the damn pump or where to check my fluid level. I'm scared that I am close to blowing the pump since it has been making noises for about two weeks. This is ridiculous since I am used to big trucks where everything is easy to find.
PLEASE HELP ME!

Lift the hood and look underneath the air intake elbow for a black canister with a cap that looks like a multi-pointed star. That's your power steering fluid reservoir. Unscrew the cap and look at the fluid level on the dipstick. The maximum level is the top notch on the dipstick.
If the fluid level is too low, add a Dexron-III compliant automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to the reservoir. DO NOT add conventional power steering fluid.

Thanks... I will be doing that as soon as I get out of school... quick question. It's standard will that change anything?
G. P. Burdell
01-11-2008, 10:15 AM
No. Manuals and automatics both use ATF for power steering, and the reservoir is located in the same place.

Standard meaning a standard trans? If so, no. But be sure to use Dexron-III Automatic Trans fluid for your power steering.

Ok so I skipped 3rd period and went out there and filled up... not too much I hope. I have another question I have a crack on my air intake tube... can I put silicon on it to see if it will work or just buy a new tube thing?
BimmerLover84

New one is $20 from the dealer. Use electrical tape or duct tape for the time being.
iowaboostin
01-11-2008, 12:12 PM
If you want to rig it, sure. If it's just a hairline crack then I'd do the same, just make sure to let it dry overnight (don't want to suck anything into your MAF). If you want to replace it, DO NOT buy a new OEM intake, instead check in the classifieds for someone parting their car out, save some dough.
edit: it's really $20 through the stealership? I guess go through them instead.

I have one that is almost brand new, used for about 1 week. I'll sell it to you for $20 shipped. New they are $35 for our cars w/ traction control. Welcome to the board :wave

Get a new part because its going to keep on breaking and you are going to suck in bits of plastic into your intake.
Mine is

A 17 year old girl who works on her on car is a bad thing? Hmmm... this is my 4th vehicle but the first time to be a car. Working on trucks and jeeps is basically easy compared to a car where my little hand can barely fit inbetween stuff. I am going to electric tape it since(scared to get shit sucked up in there) it's so small and see if my uncle has another one laying around before I buy one. Hmm this is cool. How about another question? My "check control" light comes on all the time and says stuff about my brake lights.. but they seem to be fine. Ohh and I have a small crack on the body kit, slide skirt under my door... can i just replace that piece? I'm not in a hurry to do it but when I get some time....

Pull the BL blubs and clean the contact on the bulbs and the lights. If that does not solve it change out the brake light switch (http://www.bimmerzone.com/brakelight.htm). You have to pull the panel under the dash above the drivers side footwell. It is a pain to get to for the $20 part.

On the power steering cap there are 2 "indents/lines" on the piece that points into the oil, the lower one is the line it should be around when the oil is cold, upper line when warm, try not to go over, if u do,the excess will come out the hole in the cap

Yes I DID! I went to O'riellies and the guy looked at me like I was stupid when I asked for Automatic Transmision Fluid and told him it was for my power steering. So just to double check I called a dealership to make sure I wasn't about to mess my car up!
Hmph.

the brake light error could be caused by the bulb connections. if there is any corrosion or some type of change in resisance at the connection, it will throw the code. also, it could be the brake switch behind the brake pedal. if you search on here, i believe there is a diy switch replacement. the sideskirt can be replaced as well.

i think he's referring to the actual metal body panel that's shaped like the lux skirts? a lot of people call those "skirts" even though that's not the best name for them.

they arent making the assumption based on your age or sex, they are simply assuming since you had the question in the first place. its common for people to have questions like that reguarding the levels.
also, you should try using the search function on the boards, its really helpful when looking for information about your car.

Probably not. The powersteering hoses are terrible from BMW. You probably have a weeping problem from the hoses.. It probably does not show itself as a leak, but will be low again in another year.
Oh and the hoses are very expensive to replace. :(

I bet BMW would make a 5.7L 570 HP 500 tq truck with the way they can push out 100 or more hp per liter with out turbo...lol that would be awsome...you'd dominate all!!!

Hannah
Interesting since here you drive a "1998 BMW 238i" but in your description it says "BMW 1999"

You should make a BMW truck and go mudding with that :buttrock you'd dominate all
I have been toying with this idea, hypothetically. I bought my car so I could continue modding my Jeep into the "trailer queen" realm. But since I'm spending so much maintaining the BMW that the Jeep has taken a back burner, I figured why not sell both and lift an X3............ :devillook
Comes down to cash issues, lol
plus then I'd be back to having one vehicle with questionable DD abilities.

Im confused Why do you use atf instead of power steering fluid? is this a special occasion because it was really low or something or is that always what you use for our cars?

That is what is specified for our cars.

That is what is specified for our cars.
(you use aft because our rack and pinion has a tighter clearance, also the pump design is a tighter design, therefore you need to use a thinner fluid, ATF to be exact!)

01-15-2008, 01:41 AM
and it is a thiner fluid and is easer to pump.
Easier to pump, less drag on motor MORE POWER!

power steering fluid is thinner than ATF in my experience?
BimmerChuck
01-15-2008, 11:59 AM
Eh, hydraulic fluid is just hydraulic fluid. I put in Catepillar hydraulic fluid in my power steering. Now I can use my steering to winch tree trunks out of the ground, J/K.
But for real, when my hoses started to leak around the banjo bolt instead of using the replacement assembly which is like $350 I cut off the the hoses and clamped regular red hydraulic hoses to the banjo bolt and fixed it for $15. You might have a similiar problem. In the powersteering line there is a small metal reducer (forget what it is for) I took it out and put it in my replacement line.

Hmmm... really when I asked about all this since my car is a standard it was IMPARITIVE that I use ATF and not normal PS fluid... I'm confused.

Yes, it's important to use the correct fluid, as different systems can have internal seals etc damaged by using the wrong fluid. You did the right thing! ;)

First thing: You are correct
Second thing: I actually searched for the type of Power Steering fluid the E36 took. Alas, I did voluntarily click on this thread and I voluntarily read every page. It was nothing new in forum terms, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Oops. :D
