What exactly is paint sealant and how does it differ from regular wax?

Kyle K.

Paint sealants are synthetic mixtures of various polymers and a whole bunch of other scientific mumbo jumbo that protects your paint just like wax, but it bonds to the paint better and is more durable so it usually lasts upwards of 6 months instead of about 6 weeks.

So, if paint sealants last that much longer than conventional waxes, how come they are rarely mentioned? Or better yet, why do I never see these products in the stores anywhere.

I do actually somewhat enjoy washing and waxing my car, but if paint sealant is just as good or better than wax and lasts alot longer, then I may just have to try it due to the long-lasting nature of it.

One more question... Is sealant a total substitute for a wax, meaning if I did use the sealant would I not need to wax at all?

NLR,

Your first question about how they are never mentioned just depends on where you're looking. Zaino and Klasse are mentioned quite often on this board, and on autopia.org (the detailing mecca) every sealant under the sun is mentioned constantly.

About why they aren't more available in stores, I'm really not sure. I can only venture a guess that since they are somewhat more expensive, and many of them are made by small companies that aren't in retail stores at all, they aren't carried there.

Finally, yes, the sealant is a stand alone product. You don't need to wax over it, although many fanatics will use a pure carnuba as a "topper" to give a better gloss.

Sorry to take the thread off topic, but I figured it close enough to the original topic and might be useful for others :dunno

PM sent too. :)

Can you cover my question about the C/F here?

Does this work similiar to a wax when used over a finished C/F finish?

Thanks!

So when is the best time to apply the Pride Paint Sealant... before or after a polish or wax job?

What a great offer! PM sent.

Jon, usually people apply it after a good polish. You can use this instead of wax, but if you do wax (carnauba) you can wax over the sealant for a better shine like kyle mentioned.

I got my sealant today and all I can tell you so far is that it smells good. :D Its 41 degrees and not too pretty outside so I can't really go on a detailing trip yet. Hopefully it will clear up a bit this weekend and I'll be able to give it a shot.

Also, I got an autogeek catalog with the selant and its really nice! It'll really help me out when I'm trying to show people what kind of stuff they need to get. :buttrock

Thanks Jason!

I am definitely going to buy another bottle of this when we need more! :D

Thanks Jason!

I just got the Paint Sealant today and will use it next week. Will it be alright to clay the vehicle first, apply the paint sealant, and apply Zymol Cleaner Wax on top of it?

Jason@Autogeek

Clay the vehicle first-follow with a polish and the paint sealant last.

John, please, in all honesty throw that "Zymol Cleaner Wax" away. It's crap.

You might try: Clay, then Detailer's Pride Sealant, then a topper carnuba (PURE wax, not cleaner wax) on top of that. If your paint has swirls or somesuch, it's time to break out the Porter Cable and hit the paint with 3M PI-II Fine Cut Rubbing Compound or 3M FI-II Machine Polish. That would be done after the clay, before the sealant. Then for a deep, wet look you would still follow the sealant with a carnuba topper.

Ben,

Yeah I heard some negatives reviews about the Zymol Cleaner Wax but I bought two of them from Costco and not sure if I want to waste it.

I do have some swirls and light scratches on the car. I dont have enough money to buy an orbital but can I just use something like Meguiar's Paint Cleaner or Swirl remover?

You've got a AA Turbo e36 M3 and an e46 M3.... you can afford a BUFFER :D

Just playing man, if you want to do it by hand it surely can be done. It will take quite a bit longer and your results won't be quite as impressive, but it will still work. You'll want to use one fo the products Ben mentioned, or something like Meguiar's Dual Action Cleaner Polish. Make sure you work it for a while until the polish becomes dry and you start to see the gloss in the paint again. If you stop before that, the product isn't fully broken down and it might leave some tiny scratches/hazing on the surface.

oh yeah...

Jason, you say to apply the cleaner wax, then the sealant on top of that... so you're saying that the sealant will bond to the paint even if theres other stuff on there? Does it contain any kind of cleaners like AIO?

No, no...sealant will not bond to ANY type of wax. Use a pure cleaner, PS21/S100 SEPC/GEPC, or if you're looking locally either Meguiars Paint Cleanser (1/3 step process) or Mother's Paint Cleaner. If you've got light swirls, you may want to consider either 3M or Meguiars SMR. All of the above products are available at :chix PepBoys...Yes, that rice outlet...
