hey guys, i know i havent posted in a while.
i'm having some problems with my 95 3.0l M3. i hesitates to start every now and then, when cold especially, and when it does start it seems to run like its missing. kinda smokes a little bit and its running very rich, just dumping gas at it. so i've been searching and it seems the closest problem i can find that sounds like it is the 02 sensor. my car is chipped, which can cause premature sensor burn out, and i just turn 109k miles, so i know its about to for one any way. does it sound like a new o2 sensor would fix me up? cause i'm about to go buy one right now and hope

how about a tuneup for starters. with new fuel filter and plugs and air filter.

+1
bad O2s can cause you to run rich. If they haven't been changed before and you're at 110k,you will probably be changing them in the very near future.
Are you getting any codes thrown?
Is your car only acting like this for the first few minutes of a startup when it's cold out?

its showing the check engine light when i first start up. it runs funny all the time. there has been a few cases where it ran fine after it started up for a moment, but then it went back to running chopy and rich. yesterday i was driving down the road and it just started running fine, then as soon as i got on it a little harder it switched right back to messed up. i just put a new air filter on and changed the oil, plugs arent that old but i'll be changing them soon any way just for good measure. i'm lead to believe its the o2 sensor because the behavior just randomly started one day, and then did the strange fading in and out. my car has been chipped which does cause premature wear, so it was just the most likely thing that i could come up with

so the check engine light is staying on, or just upon start up? When you initially start it up, the light (along with others) will be on, but goes out.
If you are getting a CEL, what codes are you getting? Your symptoms could be a number of things, most likely involving a sensor, but which one, won't be sure until you get the codes read.

it just comes on durring initial start up. when it doesnt want to start it makes an awful clanging noise like the starter is going out, then it stops, then it slowly turns over and starts. in those times of horable noise that makes me convulse, then light stays on if it doesnt start and i leave the key on. i havent been able to get the code read yet, sadly i do not have a code reader yet, and ofcourse mine is obd1 so the only way to get it read in my area is the dealership, which ofcourse cause of the holidays i havent been able to get out there and what not. the new o2 sensor should be here today, since theres only one i just went ahead and got it, hopfully that will fix it up. other people think my car runs nice cause it sounds like a lopping 350, but i cant take driving a M car with no power, its kinda sac religious lol.

What is the code? Do the gas pedal trick.

ok so i just put in a new o2 sensor, better but not fixed entirely
pulled the plugs and one was fouled out from the bad valve cover gasket i just replaced, changed those, better, but still not fixxed
it starts fine, but then runs like its missing, its running very rich, just throwing gas at the engine.
once i finally got the pedal trcik to work it says 1-4-4-4 which of course the Bentley manual says means no code stored. theres no check engine light on start up. no control check light, nothing to go by.
i'm thinking maybe idle control valve?
its weird cause the first few days it seemed to fade in and out. it only did it about 4 times, but 3 times on start up it would run fine, then after running for a minute or two it would go back to shitty. one time i was just driving down the road and it kicked into running normal then went back to crap after about a half mile. i'm just kinda dumb founded as to where to go from here. maybe a coil pack problem? i visually inspected them when i changed the plugs but of course with a part like that visual inspection means nothing really. i had hope the new o2 sensor would have done it. i know the manual talks about reseting the computer by holding the pedal down for ten seconds but i cant seem to get that to work, i was thinking maybe just reseting it and telling it theres new parts maybe. any one have any insight?
