View Full Version : I think it might be time to let it go...

Well... I've owned my m3 for about a year now, and it has been a blast. The thing is awesome- plenty of power, good handling, great looks, etc etc. However, it's not that practical for me :(. I don't have a garage, and it's my DD- the weather not only takes its toll, but I feel I'm not treating the car 'right'. I can't stop worrying I might get a ding in a parking lot, or wrecked in an accident. I'm frustrated with being annoyed by the police for various parts (lights, tint, plates...). So this is it- sell, or keep. If I keep it, I have to mod my driveway, to mod my car, pay another 4 grand every year in maintenance, and then mods on top of that. I will be buying a Gen 3, Black on tan leather Lim Edition 4runner if I sell....

Geez, with that kind of attitude, you may as well not get nice things at all. Shit happens, and you need to come to terms with that and enjoy your car. And it's just that: a car. It's not a precious painting that needs to be preserved in a museum or a bugatti royale that is worth millions. The person you sell it to will most likely treat it even worse than you. Just relax and try not to let your neurotic fears rule your decsions. I don't have a garage either, cause i live in a condo. Sure, it would be nice, because i could do work in it and stuff, but what of it? I'm not going to deny myself a nice car because i don't have the right house. I guess the point here is: you're over-reacting

:( I know... but it'll make getting back into the Euro scene that much more exciting later! Plus, these things are falling in price faster than the stock market

A lot of people have told me that with my history of M3's that I shouldn't be allowed to get one anymore, even though I always kept my car protected from the elements, from parking lots, from reckless driving, abusing it, maintaining it extremely well, etc - everyone comes from different walks of life, despite all I did for my car a lot of people told me I'm not deserving of another, yet here you are with a good car you haven't destroyed and you're thinking that you shouldn't keep it anymore?
Nah, keep it - you'll miss it - I know I miss mine, hell even my ex-gf cried the day I sold my wrecked 95 M3 to a member on bf.c, it wasn't even her car but she loved it so much (she's a BMW nut), that she cried when I sold it - if she loved my totaled car that much, you'll definitely miss yours even more.

4Runner?? Ha Ha.
That'll be satisfying for about 3 weeks and then you'll be like 'this payment sucks ass and I have ZERO fun in this thing.... I miss my M'.
Ask me how I know.

Went from my m to an suv. Didn't take too long to realize what I mistake that was and now I'm back in an m.

i am in same situation kind of, thinking of selling my M , then last few weeks i am daily on internet looking for something more practical for Northeast driving situations. Then for some reason i can not think of letting M3 for anything less then E46 M3. I realized in past months since owning a M3, that you are in a One of a kind car. Just cruising on highway and all the looks you get is special. I had Mustang and Camaro but that dont even compare. Rather try to get some DD like little Toyota or similar and park your M for fun times , because you will miss it.

i could understand if it was for like a e55 or a m5 etc but for a 4 runner its not worth it

lol, $4,000/yr in maintenance. Do you buy a completely new suspension and all new wheels and tires every year in addition to replacing all of your subframe bushings? Come on man.

pretty much :stickoutt... since when do JUST those things go wrong. It's the little stuff that adds up, sorry if you disagree. Ever think about the motor in your car... sometimes stuff can go wrong in there too. I'll try to sell it to my dad, so I can still drive it every now and then :devillook. The best of both worlds.

My TWO year extremely rough estimate comes to about $3500-4000, but that includes $1,000 for new wheels and tires, $500 for brakes, $300 RTABs installed, $150 guibo installed, $100 rear shock mounts, etc etc.. a lot of long term maintenance.. I hope you have better luck in the future :)

Maintenance should come no where near 4k/year.
Upgrades and such..... sure, easily 4k/year. You buy a brand new 4Runner (or new anything for that matter) and your 400+ dollar per month payments will put you easily over the cost to own/operate an older M car. Plus, your insurance will be higher as well, perhaps.
Trust me man, you DO NOT want to replace your M with a non-sports car. You WILL get bored very quick.
You, my friend, need a beater POS for DD duty. That's the only way to fly.

4k a year is not accurate.
if you are an enthusiast about your car (which most people here are,) then you should be doing work yourself.
I'll do just about anything myself minus an engine/tranny rebuild.
that's where you really save the money.

who said I was making payments? used car ftw... so, no payments, just making money by "downsizing" =p... sure it's going to be boring, but if I can get my dad to buy the M, hey, I'll still be able to use it on weekends!!!! I HIGHLY doubt if insurance is going up any higher for a 18 year old, with an M3 lolzz

It sounds like your housing arangement doesn't allow you to work on the car. I bought mine knowing I have a garage and a budget to buy any tool. I've spent $4,000 in the first 6 months of owning mine. Filters, belts, fluids, hoses, panels and 91 octane. These cars are expensive. The wife's Honda cost $500 in the last 6 months. Based on your description of the situation, I think you should sell it. Good luck in whatever.

As I don't know more details of your situation, I can understand the part about not feeling like you are treating your car right. Right now mine sits under the car cover after it gets washed every weekend. If mine was a daily driver I would have 1. maintenance costs go up, 2. an embarassingly dirtier car, 3. lots of extra rock chips from driving on the highway every day, and some other reasons. There is nothing wrong with going to something else more practical, but I wouldn't spend alot of money on it. Just my two cents. You already know you will miss the car if you sell it.

Once you start thinking about other cars you've already made the decision.

Need something more practical? Sell your coupe for a sedan if you love the M3 that much.
And as far as the police go... fix your stuff and they shouldn't bother you about it.

I say do what you gotta do. if its about the money, I'll say if you have the money to maintenance the car then I'll say keep it. if you really cant afford it then sell it. we all have our difficulty times, but who knows, maybe later on in the future you will have tons of money and you can go buy yourself a better condition e36 m3 or an e46 m3.

keep it man... its a great car thats had all its maintenance done.
you wont get any of the money youve put into it back out.
stop worrying about dents and door dings, its a 10year old car, DD it... wash it once and week and enjoy it.
hell i DD my e46 m3, and deal with door dings, dents and rock chips.
these cars are meant to be driven, they arent made to sit in garages.

Maint. isn't $4k/year.
Get a car cover for it.
Keep the car, you'll regret it and then be looking for another M or sports car.

Maaayyybee $2k per year for maintenance. $4k if you include your gas, tolls, and food you buy while you're in the car...maybe.
