anyone using this? I'm considering this stuff and the Lubro Molly Voll-Synthese 5W-40 stuff. My engine has 117k and was going to switch to a 5W-40.

My local NAPA carries lubro-moly and each quart is like $12 bucks

$25 is not too bad for a gallon. Not exactly discounted but all the major brand synthetic stuff is $7/qt now. That's where I saw it too. I'm trying to ignore the fact that it says it's for diesel trucks and not gas-powered sports cars!
The Lubro Moly you can get online pretty easily and it comes out to about $7.50/qt. They sell this frigin 5L jug for about $35 - which is about 5.2 qts so you have to buy two or have a couple extra $12qts hanging around - or mix it with something else.

I used the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 oil in my M3 over the summer. Like Brianc said, I ignored the Turbo Diesel Truck words on the label, and purchased it for the 5W-40 weight. It did seem to burn at a higher rate that the 10W-40 that I have in the car now, probably due to the 5W. My plan for next summer is to use the recommended 15W-40 weight oil. I am using the 10W-40, since during the winter in Virginia it can get warmer than high temp limit of the recommended 5W-30.

I'm in southern california so I could probably get away with a 10W40 all year. It only gets down to about 49 degrees in the 'winter' ;)
I also burn a lot of oil. Of couse the S52 is notorious for it. When I used mobil 1 5w30 I burned about 1qt every 1400 miles.

Nice cars all you bastards! Good to see everone taking such good care of these cars.

I am currently using this oil and don't see that changing any time soon, i have barely any VANOS noise, zero oil consumption in 2300 miles so far, and it's smooth as hell compared to the SHITTY Castrol 5w-30 that BMW supplies, which i tried my last oil change. never again.

I've tried several oils on this motor so far, and out of all of them the M1 5w-40 is hands down the best oil i have used.

I'm using it in my X5 and have used it in the past in my M3. It is a good oil. MY problem is that Walmart does not always keep it in stock or it runs out quickly.

yeah, using hte castrol 5w-30 bimmer supplied or mobil 1 5w-30 I had alot of oil consumption and alot more engine noise. Lifter tick after hard driving.

I don't use the oil you guys talked about, but just going to a thicker top weight (i use castrol syntec 5w-50) I eliminated my oil consumption and lifter tick.
