Weird I was gonna get the supertechs from VAC. I placed th eorder and they couldn't get them in stock for weeks they said so they upgraded me to their in house 12,000 rpm double valve springs for free! I thought that was pretty cool of them :)

Now about those 12,000 rpms........:devillook

$$$$$$

Unnecessary for what I want to do for now, but it'll be easy in the future to upgrade ;)

Stock hydraulics good for 7800 rpm or so?

yea, from what I can gather from the swedes the hydrualics can go up to around 7500 safely.

I would not use much more valve spring than I need. Heavier duty springs may add drag and accelerate wear in the valvetrain.

is there a reason to upgrade the springs for FI application if not going past stock redline or running too huge of exh manifold pressure? just curious.

I had this same question, What i was told by another vender was that when you go FI the stock valve springs will not hold boost and release it back in the exhaust causing you to look boost pressure in the intake manifold which cause you to loose boost/horse power.

I hope someone responds to this with experience.

I have used Supertechs on several different engines, including the M50. For the money, there is no better kit out there. $400ish and you get springs, seats, and titanium retainers. The valve spring pressure at free height is roughly 10psi over stock, so its not a super strong spring. On that note though, you don't want a super strong as it starts to add rolling resistance to the cam which will hurt some of your bottom end.

For what its worth though, stock M3 conical valve springs are good to atleast 7500rpms. We have several M50 2.5L around here running M3 valve train and cams turning 7500rpms all day; some over 50k miles. So if RPM's are your goal, then there isn't much of a point in my opinion.

As for the boost vs. valve spring issue, it really only applies to high boost (over 20psi). The inlet pressures can make higher mileage weaker valve springs hesitant to close as fast as normal resulting in a little bit of unintended overlap. I have only seen this happen on a Supra though, so I can't comment on its use in M50's.

This is good information. Do any of these cars run aftermarket cams? The common conception on the board seems to be the stock valvetrain is only good up to ~7200 rpm.... cams run out of steam around 6900 i always thought.

I have always seen these kits for under 500, aka i dont think this price is anything extraordinary.

Yes i have this site. I just did not see it for a M54B30 motor/head so i did not think i could order them. Does this spring set fit any BMW motor

Doubt it. Call up supertech and ask them for your application. Honestly, you are the only person on this board who is taking on a project m54b30, so if you arent willing to look for them, well :dunno

I have Supertech dual springs, +1mm intake and inconel exhaust valves, titanium retainers, and spring seat locators in my Supra. I rev to 9100rpms, although I can easily spin it higher if I wanted to, on 35-40 lbs of boost with aggressive cams. No issues.

Agree'd. Unless you are running non-stock cams, or are running significantly higher rpm than stock, they are unnecessary. Even at higher than stock RPM, I'm pretty sure a lifter float would be more likely than a valve float from not enough spring.
