if your truly looking to do a motor swap check into the LS1 ... if you want to stay german id look into the obd1 m3 swap. those are my preferences... however a simple search would give you all the answers you need.

In order of difficulty:
M50b25 (or TU, can't remember what you have in your MY) or S50b30
S52b32 or M52b28 OBD1 converted
Anything not made by BMW, or the M54 (hard to get the electronics working on that one)

the ls1 is tried and true though. many people have done it and theres plenty of literature about it.
the m54 would be very very nice but would have to be professionally tuned and the electronics are uber hard.
it depends on what your looking for out of the swap.... great gas mileage... power.... driveability.... reliability.... theres different #1's for all the different want's and need's

If thats your mind set, sell the car/shell and buy a 92 DX THEN swap in a 2jz.
After fabbing all the mounts and all
AEM
tuning
other misc things...
You're in for the price on an M.

The E36 (pre '96?) M3 engine is a 3.0L S50 motor. It is OBDI and should drop right in. Engine bay should work, harness I don't know but probably. Check the engine swap forum for M50/S50 swap. I would like to swap for a euro spec S50!

Yes it will bolt up just fine. Go to the For Sale section, you can find 413 Red labeled DMEs for about 150-300$

The S50/M50 S52/M52 engines are practically identical block everything should just bolt on. If you are keeping OBD-I then you should be able to reuse your exact harness you just need a new ECU because the S50/S52 engines are tuned different. Or you can talk to a chiptuner and they can make you a chip that will work with your current ECU.

You can mate all the e36 transmissions (US versions) with any of the engines without a problem. The only time there is an issue is when you do an auto-manual swap, or the Getrag based 4-bolt driveshafts vs the ZF 6-bolt driveshafts.
