I have a 1997 328 ic. I have been having chronic problems with P0455, large leak in evaporative emissions. It is not the fitting on top of the expansion tank and it's not the gas cap. I also occasionally smell gas in the garage.
I looked under the back seat and this is what I saw on the right side. The Bently manual says there should be a fuel return line, but there isn't. The fitting does not look like you can put a hose on it. And I didn't see any dangling hose. It also does not look like the fitting has a path to the gas tank. There is a gas odor. I ran the engine, but did not see any leaks. The fuel gage read 7/8.
What's going on? :help

There's two pumps. Pull the cover off the left side under the back seat and see if its there.

do a little research on "charcoal canister"...they have been known to make car smell like fuel. yours will be located in the trunk under the spare tire.
Do you think that canister can cause problems when filling up? E.g.: you only pumped half a tank of gas into an empty tank and the pump shuts off thinking the tank is full a few times.

I did pull the cover off the left side, but I didn't take a picture. It had one fitting and one hose.

I looked at the canister under the spare tire. Everything there looked like new.

No, I don't. That just depends on the geometry of the filler pipe and the sensitivity of the pump.

sort of related to this.
today my car dump about a tank of gas on the road on the way back to the shops.
decided to remove my rear seat and the fuel pump access covers.
my righthand side (US passanger side)one looks just like yours, lots of sand, and only one hose. the one hose was loose, and was pissing petrol when the car was in the ON position.
also looked in my bently, and it shows 2 lines, but i only have one, and the 2nd doesnt really look like it would take a fuel line, as it has a cutout on one side, and some "rails" along the sides, that would definaltey not give a proper seal.

Im going through this right now, and my pump looks exactly like the OP's. I hate how the Bentley just shows one version of everything.
So there was never supposed to be a hose coming out there? The OP said the expansion tank was fine. Where do the two hoses on top of the expansion tank lead to?

I think i fixed my filling up issue. gas cap was bad... rubber seal was damaged. So i think it was letting air into the tank which cause the pump to abruptly stop.
