I think I've captured a ticking noise that bothers me. It hasn't been doing it long. What am I hearing? TIA-jn

Sounds a lot like lifter tick. Mine had that intermittently when I bought it -- don't know what oil was in there before, but when I changed it to synthetic 10W40 the noise went away and hasn't returned in 7k miles.

Fresh 10w40 to the top line of the stick.
You guessed right on the battery.

thats a simple "trick" to know when its time for an oil change. you want to change the oil before you hear the lifter tick.
your only supposed to fill it 2/3 the way up to the line.

ok what is lifter tick?
The oil is up to par at 5.2 quarts.
(ok been searching...i dug up lifter tick, now what...?...change to synthetic from castrol 10w40....it doesn't seem to go away when warm)
Is there anyway you can make another video with the engine revving a bit. Also don't stick the camera super close to the engine...makes the noises kind of muddy sounding.
It does sound a bit like lifter tick (worn out hydraulic valve lifters)...could also be a worn out timing chain tensioner causing a loose timing chain, hard to tell from that video.
I wish more people would post videos or sound clips...makes diagnosing so much easier than words... :)

sure..i'll work on that tomorrow....
are either of those easy fixes?
Hydraulic lifter replacement isn't easy.
Timing chain tensioner is a piece of cake.

Does the tick increase in frequency when you rev the engine? Does it ever go away (when hot, at high rpm)?
Sounds a bit like injectors in the video but it is hard to tell?

+1
My old Dakota made a similar noise from day one, turned out be a noisy injector. But it could also be lifter tick, it's really hard to tell from just a video. Injector noise will come more from the injector side of the head, while the lifters will be from inside the head.
Pick up some Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner, that stopped the injector tick on my 323, and it can't hurt anything.

I bet that is your belts. Get some belt dressing and see if it goes away. If it does, it is either worn belts or a bad tensioner.
