For people wondering on what to use for OBD1 diagnostic tools I would like to share my view as one of the best BMW software scan tool.
I Have the Assenmacher Retriever AST5700 scan tool. The Ast Retriver has been discontinued and now they use a laptop based system that is better than the retriever but alot more money and not as easy to use/handle. The Ast Retriever can be purchased new (old stock) for about $900-$1300 depending on where you purchased it. Anyway it works fantastic.
The tool can recall and reset fault codes, live data, service light reset and activations on engine, transmission, airbag, and ABS. Climate control is included.
