I have 2008 bMW 323i ... one of my friends who has a Civic Si thinks he can beat my Bmw 323i because my car is the lowest model. HOwever we can't race and find out whos faster cause I live in Toronto and it is snowing like MAD out here.
WHat do you guys think ....is he right? Can he really beat me?
I am starting to get really mad at all my friends saying "Oh lowest model" when they drive honda civics... and crappy old Preludes..
Please give me comfort is my car still fast? My dad bought me 323i So I was grateful for what I got.. I didn't want to get greedy and ask for a higher model because he pays for my education also.

Solve this dispute on paper. There must be published hp, 0-60 times, etc. numbers for both cars. Or you can buy some really good snow tires and destroy him as he tries to race you with all-seasons. You drive a BMW he drives a Honda. Case closed.

Wait until it quits snowing. Until then, just have fun talking smack! :D

Anyone can beat anyone on any given day. If his engine dies on the stating line, my 335i could beat John Force's funny car. Not likely, but the point is that there are too many factors to just say "this car will beat that car". What mods do you have? What mods does he have? How good are you at shifting? How good is he? What kind of tires do you both have? Etc etc etc...

Who cares what other people think? Just drive your car and enjoy it.

Define "fast". Compared to my 335i, it is not fast. Compare my 335i to my neighbor's '69 Camaro that runs mid-10's, and my 335i is not fast. Compare that to a funny car, and the Camaro is slow. Fact of the matter is, there are some fast Honda's out there. There have been several street driven Honda's at my local track run low 10's in the 1/4.
All that said, this honestly sounds like a high-school "my dick is bigger than yours" pissing match. Just be happy with the car you dad bought you. My dad bought me a 1988 V-6 firebird for my first car. It was slower than crap. But I enjoyed it for what it was, even though my friends had '69 Chevelles with 454s, etc.
BTW, a quick Google search shows the Civic does 0-60 in 7.2. BMW.ca says the 323i does it in 7.4. BMW's website seems to be conservative on their times, so I would say it's a driver's race. :buttrock

+1 A stock V6 Rav 4 can smoke both of them (323i and Civic Si) while carrying a family 6 so would not buy it to drag race. No matter what you buy there is always a faster car.

Their acceleration numbers are very close on paper I believe. I will say the outcome will depend on who has a better launch, with the edge going to the 323 if you can launch it properly mainly due to the higher torque and better gearing IMO. 1 way to settle it though, but please do it safely.

Just enjoy the car and don't waste your time with your friends. Your dad was very generous in buying you a BMW as your first car. I have to pay for my own ride and live with the public transit before.
With recards to your car's acceleration: before I answer your Q I think you should learn to control the car and know your limits (no worries, I am doing the same with mine too). I once outrun a Dodge RAM with an RSX Premium (AT) but that's by knowing how to harness my car's power against the truck driver. A friend of mine who drives a modified Nissan Altima (exhaust, Cold air intake, race header...etc) got beaten by a CSX Premium. hahah the altima driver said he wasn't pushing hard but I think the CSX driver knows how to control his car.

At the end of the day your dad bought you a BMW......do the math. Scratch that, your dad bought you a brand spanking new 2008 BMW, not some 10 year old POS road hard put up wet BMW, a brand new BMW.
Performance is one thing but given the choice of a Porsche Cayman S and say a Honda Civic with 10,000 dollars of go fast parts I will take the Porsche all day long even though it is very possible that Civic is cheaper and faster, but at the end of the day it is a Civic, end of story.
Now none of this is to say Civics are bad cars, they are not, they just don't compete in the same class as a BMW.
Besides with performance numbers so close anything from weather, to driver, to car condition could be the deciding factor. If you want to brag go back to "My dad bought me a Bimmer" Hell I am jealous. 8D

At the end of the day, you'll be driving home in your brand new Bimmer, while he drives home in his Honda.

I love the "You drive a BMW" reply. The Civic is a nice car for the money. I'd say unless he's a good driver, you'll beat him because it's RWD and if he launches hard he loses speed.

FWIW, I had an 07 Si and it was a pile of garbage. The most unreliable car I have ever owned (and I have owned dozens). The honda forums are alight with complaints about these things...The Si is NOT a straight line car. It makes too little torque (138 lb/ft) and too little hp, but all of it at really high RPM's. To get a 7.2 launch out of a Si, you have to be completely PERFECT with the launch. Too few RPM's and you bog hopelessly. Too many and you go nowhere.
Now on a road course, the Si is REALLY competent. It is just too darned easy to drive fast on a track. Just don't try to stop as the stock brakes are worthless.
What I will never understand is people who buy BMW's to drag race them. I respect and support all forms of car enthusiasm, but just don't get drag racing. There are so many cars that are more well suited for it...camaros, mustangs, corvettes...
