View Full Version : AFM to MAF conversion with SAFC2 ?

I was under the impression that you could use an apexi safc2 unit to translate a hotwire MAF signal back into an AFM signal so the ECU would understand it. Has anyone actually done this?

My car is a 95 318 m42 with AFM flap style air meter. I have the SAFC2 wired up and tuned the a/f pretty well, But I have a MAF from an m3 that I would to put in there if I could. I know how to wire it, but dont know if the safc2 can translate it. Is it something to do with messing with the in 01 out 0x setting?

I thought it could combine two signals into one but i don't think it can convert from one to the other.

Though it has been a LOOONG time since i have looked at that unit.

Yeah I know it can do that too, Does anyone know what sort of output MAF's give? Is it just a voltage signal? 1-5v? please?

I guess this is how I would have to wire it, if the safc2 could translate.

ugh then why would you even need a translator, something has to be different in how it gives a signal to the ECU. I really want to think there is something that you can set on the safc to take hotwire maf input and then set flap output.

I really thought a couple people on here did this though.

I used a ford MAF and the split second tuner on my 89 325. It worked well except I was useing 40# injectors and could not take enough fuel out at idle. they are both 1-5v signals but the volume of air is going to be different at the same voltage so if you can adjust for the correct amount of fuel it should work.

nice nice. I like the sound of that.

This is one of the best posts I've found about doing the swap, and what I went by when I did mine

I don't think it'd work very well given how differently an AFM and a MAF would react. The MAF curve would be an exponential curve upwards, while the AFM meter would likely be a logarithmic curve. This curve being voltage vs. airflow.

You'll have major problems correcting at either end of the curve(high and low).

awesome, thank you.

EDIT: that really doesnt say anything about the swap. it is more just how to install the SAFC...

That's all you need, just wire up your MAF, and have the apexi intercept the signal, then you can modify it and feed it back to the ECU. Just make sure to also wire in an intake air temp sensor. Your ecu will never know the difference

OK great. Thank you thats what I was waiting to hear!
