hi all, i am currenlty comtemplating the possibility of getting a new 335i. i am just wondering if using the chips to increase hps will SHORTEN the life or compromise the reliability of the engine.

can someone with experience help?

Anytime you make something work harder, you reduce its lifespan. This applies to everything from overclocking CPUs, to "chipping" cars, to shooting steroids. :stickoutt

I,m sure the N54 can take a whole lot more power than stock and last just as long and problem free as a stock one if its properly tuned and maintained.I,m not talking about a radical tune like boosting beyond what everyday driving and pump gas would require.Time will tell if i,m right or wrong.

you wouldnt be hurting it that much if u just upped the boost a couple PSI..im pretty sure thatd be fine

I think you're ok if you pick the right system. there's a lot of choices out there...I have the jb2r and couldn't be more happy with it. the boost levels are moderate but deliver excellent performance...in addition it retains all of the factory safeguards because it intercepts information before entering the ECU. customer service is excellent too.

I ran my Supra about 4 psi above stock typically (15# instead of 11.5#) and had a problem with engine seals, but I attribute that to autocrossing the car and running it at redline and 17# of boost. (The 420rwhp in my sig is at the stated 15#; it averaged ~550rwhp at 19#.)

I also had one of the two turbos fail at 120k miles, but for a 1993 car, that's about the average lifetime for the turbo, so I would say that the extra boost level did not have a significant impact on the turbo itself.

Hope that helps. YMMV.

solution: lease the car and drive it like you stole it... then turn it in ;)

That is why I never buy a used car!

Bought mine with 10K and it has no problems plus I didn't lose my butt on depreciation. Only paid $41K with Premium, Sports, and Cold Weather Packages; leather; gps nav; ipod; and an extra set of very nice 18" rims with winter tires.

My 335i replaced my 2002 Corvette Z06. The Z06 had gobs of power, but it wasn't half as comfortable as my 335i.
